Covanta’s SEMASS facility turns garbage into energy

This is the second part of a series that takes a look at trash management in our region. This week we focus on the Covanta SEMASS waste-to-energy plant.

Was checking on the Waste to Energy facility in Mass called Semass that in the past was under Operating and Maintenance contract that was very interesting and challenging

It is still there and in operation. The recovery of coins in the garbage was one of our initiatives as well as making it more explosion proof for propane bottles and explosives in the garbage. Making the shredder roof out of sail cloth saved time and insurance costs. Always loved the area near Cape Cod. Took a couple of the kids with me on one of the visits to learn about waste to energy

Ted, I bet Max slobbers a lot looking at all that wonderful food...I mean he's a dog
and his primary purpose is to get to that food. Is it all dry or do you change flavors at times?

Drew, it is fresh and moist, gets frozen in containers. Each container holds 2 days, the 'leftovers' are refrigerated. Similar to the "Freshpet" or "The Farmer's Dog" food sold in stores.

Basically a mix of beef, chicken, liver, gizzards, yams, peas, carrots, whole oats, brown rice, goat milk, eggs, coconut oil, parsley.
Flavor only changes by varying the amounts of chicken or beef quantity.

All good foods.... Dona actually 'taste tests' . We could steal some and have a meatloaf for us!

Yes, Max hangs out in the kitchen the whole day, making sure its made right..... he gets samples at different stages.

Yesterday, he started to bark at the pots as they were cooling up on the stove.... "C-mon already--- I know the good stuff is up there! "

Looking, thanks for the tip! I wanted to get one of the "bug-assalt" guns, but the wifey wouldn't be happy shooting salt all over the house. It would be a blast for sure!

Got a few pieces glueing up, other pieces ripped. Time to go take Max to the groomer. Need to stop at HF too ---- I broke the backing plate on the sander. Wasn't good to drop it off the bench....
I think I'll get a spare too....

Thomas, white birch is good kindling for the fire.

Very true,these gray birch I cut down were mostly punky and top were dead now stack in pile,come December some sausages rolls good chance couple spirits I'll burning the pile.

Hi Ted, I can only lay claim to part of it ! Last year I replaced all the wheel bearings, brake drums brakes and seals, springs etc. I also installed blinkers on the car to make it safer to drive out on the road with all those crazy drivers !

Took pressure reading on the geo unit this morning. compressor is still shutting down in about 2-3 minutes from startup.
opened up the pack of Halo 4" LED lights I got for the porch ceiling. Takes a 4 3/16" hole. Why doesn't a 4" take a 4" hole? Didn't have a hole saw that big anyways, so ordered one, and some cable clamps for the boxes. Also ordered a new dual thermometer.

Found corroded battery in my IR thermometer this afternoon.

Got a large bill from the hospital from my son's wreck, so now trying to find out what exactly the car insurance paid out for medical. They claim they paid $2500, but I have no idea what for. My agent said to call or email the adjuster and gave me the info. Also Car insurance still had the totaled car on it. They never removed it, so I had to email them the proof of return of plates to MVA.

after 1 day the new eufy camera working great. I might have to get another. Like the way it tracks, and only notifies me on people or vehicles. All my other cameras capture all the trees and bushes blowing.

Got .27"of rain today. Not much, but better than none.

Good (Tuesday) morning. Overnight Low of 13.4C and it's presently 15.0C, overcast with a mild breeze. There was 0.6mm in the gauge @ 0900.

Lovely Church Council meeting last evening. Home by 1815.

Not much going on at the moment, which is fine by me... just enjoying this mild Winter weather.

And took me an hour to find my multimeter, in my bag of electrical tools.....duh I checked the basement, truck, barn, camper, garage multiple times (but not in the open bag in plain sight..)

cut up a watermelon after supper, it's pretty good. Cantalopes about ripe. one plant the leaves starting to get spots and dry up.
