With my mother selling the family farm this spring:(, I now have 2 grain bins on my acre lot that are just being used for storage. I need to have a place to put the Massey in so I came up with an idea of joining the two bins together to create a 16' x 34' shed.

Here is what I have started with.:D

I remove a section from the back of each bin.

Put a post in between the 2 bins and started installing the 2 x 8s.

Installed 2 x 10s on the back wall that the roof will attach to.

Installed doubled up 2 x 8s on the from side for the roof to connect to. There will be an openning here for 2 6 foot swinging doors.

Install rafters for the roof.

After the rafters were finished and supports tied in to the bins, I install 3/4" plywood for the roof.

Made some adjustments to the spacing on the boards on the back wall and finished up the back wall.

Need to frame in the doors and then side them with some aluminum siding sheets that I have.

I had some concerns about ventilation.
Then I saw the photo.
You're good to go and a clever use of them. Two Thumbs Up!

This will be fun to watch your progress. This is a neat way to repurpose these old grain bins.

When you have a chance, could you take some photos of the interiors to help me see how you are attaching the ends of the 2x's? I'm assuming you are using posts, but wanted to see your work.

Good luck with this project!

Nice. Way to re-purpose! Much better than the land-fill!

The 2x8s and 2x10s are attached right to the rings of the bins with 3/8 carriage bolts. There are existing upright angle irons in the bin also. Will take pictures of the inside when I get a chance.:D

bakerg--great conversion on the grain bins. I've often thought of it but never could figure out the details.

Gary,

Great idea! Will you pour concrete to even the floors or just pack in some gravel? Keep the pics coming!

Wish list is to drill holes in existing concrete and put in pins to interlock the new cement. Will see how it goes, may just put gravel in until spring. Only problem is if I put the gravel down, it may just stay.:confused2:

I used crushed bluestone in my barn, which had a concrete floor. The issue was leveling, since the barn had been used for dairy operations, it was sloped and of course had various troughs on all sides.

The gravel stayed, and is actually low maintenance, packed in it with the bota, and it set up hard. Been that way for about 8 years now. It works.

Clam shells also make an excellent floor if you have access to them, pack like concrete. Great job on the shed!

That corrugated metal is plenty strong! Are going to flash and seal the roof connections or do something else?

Going to seal the edges and shingle the roof. Thought about putting a metal roof on but shingling is much easier to cut the curves of the bins in.

What I was asking was are you using metal flashing where the wood connects to the metal bins, then sealing?

By the way, rolled roofing works very well if you don't mind the smooth look, it has the grit and everything and is basically shingles on a roll, very inexpensive and easy to use. if you want the look of individual shingles it won't do that. It does make a great underlay though for any roof.

Very creative. Looks like it's going to be tricky to get a good seal between the bins and the roof.

You are creative to come up with this useful idea and then make it happen.

I really can not visualize flashing it so the valley does not leak over time with all that water coming from each roof from just the photos but the grain bins do have a bit of an eve. If the decking was 4" higher at the bin walls it would give a natural valley and no positive water pressure could exist on the sides of the steel walls. At the top I see you can flash all the way up under the bin eves but that is not the point of high water volume.

Keep coming with the pics because your approach is needed for these small and no longer useful bins all over North America.
