Grappling fun - A Picture Thread....

Not really an illusion at all, although I was shooting that picture a touch from the front left view. To verify I walked around to the back to see how that machine was not melting. Should have taken a shot from there too. He was using that grapple to enter quickly and pile/drop the new brush up high. The flames were rolling straight up the front of the cab, but he was in and out quick and then back to the main pile to cool down and pick up a new load. I was incredulous at first and had to check on him when he stopped for fuel. Said he had found it to be the most efficient method and only felt a little heat through the cab window. LOL! I'm all about efficiency, and they were working turnkey, so more power to him, eh?

Ok, so if engine dies from sucking in hot low oxygen air, when you are right up there in the flames, and trapped in a piece of machinery that the only way out of is to open a door outward into the flames.. Just how long do you wait before jumping into the flames and hope it will get better? I am thinking this might be a great way to get cooked in your own little tomb.

Quite valid concerns about getting cooked, but the intake is up high in the rear on most of these machines.

Incidental engine failure, or even a motor drive failure would be potentially life threatening given the proximity to the fire. What happens if the boom can't come down far enough to clear the door? I don't recall how Bobcat's doors work. Is there a secondary release that allows it to come off easy?

Yes i agree the intake is further away from the flame, unlike a conventional tractor with its snoot right up there in the smoke fire and flames, but still I think it is dangerous being trapped in that little coffin with no way out but forward toward the danger. A lot of things can happen to kill an engine. And you are absolutely relying on that engine and drivetrain to keep on working to get you out of the danger in a few seconds. What if you suddenly run out of fuel or have a fuel clog in the line, or an electrical failure shuts off the fuel solenoid. On a tractor you are much further from the flames and have choices to bail off of the machine. Even in a cab you still have 2 sideways choices to get away..

I don't know about that machine specifically, but the old ones I used to run had the emergency nock out panel/window in theback of the cab.

Yeah. My 773 was not a large frame machine but the rear window had a yellow pull, it basically pulled the cord out of the window seal so the window would just fall out. Then you could exit the machine completely towards the rear.

I think you dual lid grapple aficionados have finally found something that us single lid equipped grapple guys cannot do quite as well.

I have no doubt you can pick up more loose firewood and multiple stumps with the dual lid design. But my single lid does what I need to do, and I still like it..

That's OK. Every time they do we'll show the superior stump grubbing, maneuverability and lift capacity of the single lids.

All grapples are great but don't forget small is beautiful.

I'll show you the superior stump grubbing of a backhoe. How is it any more maneuverable than a double lid? The bottom of the grapple is the same size. The weight difference is like 50 pounds.

Yep, mini ex can eat a grapple for breakfast when it comes to digging.

I don't think the little dk40 would lift this thing.
