Harbor freight

I live outside a small town that's in three counties and has an Interstate going through it. Fortunately, my property is all in one but the real headache for some of those folks used to be when they called 911. Before the system was unified, they had to describe in detail where they were. It was typical that four different LEOs showed up and sometimes eight. (county-1, county-2, county-3, city police, constable-1, constable-2, constable-3 and a state trooper.) There was enough police cars at a serious call to make a Smokey and The Bandit movie. But, it could be why there's little crime. :)

There was an intersection, I guess it's still there, in silicon valley that was in four different towns depending on which which street and which side of the street you were on. Kinda like the four corners I guess. The Post office even had one office building split up by floor and they had different zip codes and different postal carriers. Now that's a real mess. I guess if the same company occupied the building on different floors you could be promoted to a different zip code.

The asking phone number is actually a survey of sorts.
The 3 digits are generally fairly local so they can judge where their client base is from and send mailers to those zones.
Asking for the ZIP code would be a bit more accurate for that purpose .

Before we got our store I bought 10 times more Harbor Freight then now, like you I think there attitude at check out is to much, they change prices faster then most people change there socks, have reduced there warranty down to three months , do not have wifi in the store and I receive my price coupons in a email

I don't go to HF very often since the nearest store is a 2+ hr drive, but those times I have the staff has never been rude. Could care less about wifi...I'm there to shop for tools, not surf the net.
Yeah, it's a box store. For what they pay, they're not going to get tool experts working there. Then again, you don't always get anyone who knows anything at a "real" tool store either.

What cracks me up are people who blur out licence plate numbers in vehicle photos. I mean duh, you're driving around in public with your licence plate exposed to everyone anyway. It's not exactly a secret.

Granted, vehicle registration info is public record, but if I were to post a picture of one of my vehicles online I wouldn't want the plate legible either. You never know who's out there or what their intentions are. Not that any of my vehicles are worth stealing...

Do you see many black helicopters flying around?

When a store asks me for my number I tell them I don 't give that info. Then they usually say they need it for the register to complete the sale . I tell them if they just need a number, put in their own. The funniest dumb bunnies are the ones who don 't realize it is on the check I wrote . As far as I 'm concerned all they need to do business is my desire to buy and the money I pay .

HF uses the phone number to see if you are still a customer, other wise they quit sending the monthly catalog with coupons. I dropped my land line a long time ago, but continue to give that number and everyone is happy.

^^^

I have asked at the closest two stores and that is what they told me to- after a few months they quit sending the mailers out so i don't mind giving the phone # out.

guess our store has nicer people working - they are always respectful and even (cheerful) most of the time.

Obviously from this post, we all pretty much do not care for unsolicited phone calls. Rather than rely on "do not call lists', etc., perhaps the best thing to do is to answer the call, listen for the computer to pick up that we actually answered and then when some "smuck" (whom is likely just trying to make a living ) to either tell them to go (don't make me say it) or ask for their supervisor, if available, then to tell them to go (again, don't make me say it)

Supposedly, the carriers are working on this. Yeah right.

For the record, I don't care to give my number to HF. I like many of their offerings. I don't "wrench" for a living so I look over their tools. If they look like they will do what I need and are relative in size and feel to something made in China or Taiwon but costing double then HF is my choice.

I just give them my cell # and it gets typed in wrong. This months ad carried a 25% off coupon that I used twice today. Let the games begin.

When I have the time.......I try to keep unsolicited callers on the line as long as possible by asking them as many questions I can think of. These folks are on commission and wasting their time is costing them money. My goal is to keep them on the line as long as possible and get them to hang up on me. Man....retirement is fun!

I guess I did not make my self clear about the no wifi, so I will clear it up, Some people get there coupons in the sunday paper but I dont get the sunday paper, some get a HF coupon package in the mail but I get mine in a email, most stores allow you to show them your screen of your tablet and they scan it, this store does not have wifi to bring it up on screen. I paid for the Inside Track Club membership and had my plastic card so they knew I had been sent the coupons. I was told to go to the a office store and see if they would print it out for me ,or drive 60 miles one way to home to print it or pay another $87 dollars more. I was only buying the items in my cart because they were on sale. That is the worst thing about bad attitudes, they are like a disease , he had it and gave it to me and now I am on here trying to give it to you. Amazing how one half wit clerk can send a ripple half way across the USA. As far as the phone number I use a Google phone and on them if you get a unwanted call you just click spam and it will never ring your phone again and it is free and it ports your calls to your cell phone.

I simply say "no thanks" and they usually move on. It's getting so common at places, I'm tired of it. If they get pricky about it, I return the favor by saying I don't have a phone, and ask them if there's something wrong with that.

I told this to a telephone solicitor once. Left them speechless.

 That reminds me of the long twisting conversations I enjoy with the callers from Microsoft (or is it Mikrosoft?) regarding the messages my computer is sending them.

Not my idea of "fun" messing with some poor slob who's just trying to make a living. If I don't recognize the number on the caller ID, I just let the answering machine pick up. They never leave a message.

I don't go to HF for the shopping experience. Every one of them smells like freshly-cured Chinese rubber (nothing wrong with that).

I go there for cheap tools for occasional use, some have had surprisingly good build quality. So if someone's had a bad day I just let it go. I'd hate to work there too.

And the electric fly swatter has been a blast. The secret is, don't try to go all Jimmy Connors trying to hit them. Sneak it down slowly over them when they are at rest, and they will 7 times out of 10, fly right into it.

Had to laugh...then got sad...only old farts know who Connors is....Besides, I'd rather John McEnroe the fly and shame him into flying into it.

Most of the callers are overseas and calling from a call center.........they have a script.......it's fun to listen to them scramble when you go off script. I figure.....if they have the right to bug me.....I can return the favor.

On my visits to HF - they first ask if I am getting their mailers. I say yes. Then they ask for the phone number. Then they punch in my number I suppose to check if I am really on their list - seems odd but that it their routine. I don't know if they would ask for the phone number if I said no - maybe then they would ask for my address or email address to put me on their list. Maybe they are trying to track how effective their emails or mailers are re bringing in customers.

I don't mind giving the number as I like the mailers for the coupons. I like to keep a few coupons in my truck in case I am in town and need something from HF. Also get coupons in AARP mag. Once I was in town to buy a tile cutter and didn't have a coupon. I went to a drug store and browsed through some magazines I thought might have one of their ads with a coupon, and found one. Bought the mag and saved about $40 with the coupon.

I don't give out my phone number. If they quit sending me coupons, that is all right. I prefer to use the coupons in the NRA magazines, anyway. I assume they have a way to trace the source of the coupons. That should encourage them to advertise there.
