Rake Harley rakes - why so much?

Kind of a wild guess at a PTO speed of 540 RPM, I'd say the rake is turning over at about 600 or 700 RPM. It's not very fast. Very little power is needed to run the rake.
Finally Found the ATI site and it states the rotor runs at 168RPM @ 540RPM PTO speed. (Harley don't specify the RPM)

I am toying with the idea of building an impliment similar to this using a car diff for the main drive/gearbox... so 168/540 = 3.2 ratio ... so a car diff with a 1:1 chain drive to the rotor will be ideal /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dropbear I have a similar gear box off a brush hog a customer abandoned at the shop, I may make a small rake that way. Cotton picker spindles/tines may bee a good Carbide substitute. They are super hard and many of them are free. I have a cousin that made a big tiller for his 4020 John Deere tractor from a car axle and pipe. He uesd mismatched tines from hand tillers he found in the junkyard.

Looking at Harley (type) rakes and roto-tillers and comparing the price difference to the mechanical differences....
It would SEEM that a REAL HANDY diy'er could start with a roto-tiller;
Change the rotor & tines to a drum with small teeth,
Add Gage wheels,
....a few other details that might need some "invention".
Field trials,
Corrections,

I missed a nice used harley rake for 300 bucks. Too bad I was unemployed at the time.

Just kidding. That is a seriously good price for a Harley Rake too bad the time was not right for you.

FWIW, I have a roller bar 8' Landpride Rake and haven't been real impressed with its ability to windrow rocks. Maybe I am simply doing something wrong, but it just allows the rocks to pass over the roller bar or keeps them on the front of the roller. It never moves them to one side or the other regardless of the angle of the bar.
