you do understand my hesitation to speculate right? We know what Mahindra exports because its in their annual report. The only info on Kubota here is speculation. If I had to speculate... it would go like this.. there are about 1100 kubota dealers, an average dealer probably does around 80 tractor units/year (not counting RTV's, turf, etc), so there is 89,000 tractors... already several magnitude more than Mahindra's press release... but in my mind has to be a far cry from CNH, Agco, Deere, etc.
The Kubota dealers in our area average nowhere near 80 units a year each.
OK, I'll provide some more numbers for you since you are reluctant. You say your numbers would be speculative. I say you know them and they do not support your argument. Remember, you asked for numbers. You would not have insisted so intently if you did not have your numbers. It just doesn't make sense.
In the USA, the total amount of tractors sold in 2009, all brands and all HP, everything reported to AEM, was 150,957. Kubota has market share info nationally for their brand, so take that percentage and multiply. It will be a huge chunk of the market. Kubota has done a fantastic job building a good tractor and marketing it well.
The USA is not the largest tractor market. Mahindra sold 165,633 tractors just in India last year, which represented a little over 41% of the total market. That means the total market in India in 2009 was over 400k units, more than 2.5 times the USA total market.
So Mahindra globally sold more tractors last year than all the new tractors sold in the USA combined. The point being, they are not an upstart "wanna' be" tractor company that is decaling a few tractors here and there.
These are just facts, and can be interpreted in many ways. Clearly Mahindra lags way behind the Big 3 in the USA. It is their huge home market that gives them such volume. Mahindra has been in the USA for a couple of decades and is only slowly gaining market share. Likewise JD has been in India for a couple of decades and is only slowly carving out market share.
As a USA dealer for Mahindra, I surely wish we had JD or Kubota market share, but that takes time, a lot of time. High volume successful dealers do not just happen overnight. The dealer network for Mahindra is still very much growing. The Big three have mature dealers, some with decades of experience. And they know the USA market. Mahindra has shown that it has learned or is learning the USA market as well. Look at the new products, they are world class. In September 2010 many more new models will roll out.
