My wild new "jungle" property had very dense weeds 4' - 6' tall & saplings. Two bush hoggings & then a flail mowing (basically a finish mower), & it looks great! Nice, dark green grass. Now that the big stuff is gone, any time I flail mow it again it looks just like a lawn. Very pleased.

A question to those of you who have been successful reducing weeds in pastures by finish mowing: what mowing height are you cutting at?

I mow my horse pasture about every two weeks with my MMM at transport height, which is approximately 6". Tall weeds such as Thistle and Queen Anne's Lace have been almost completely eliminated, but shorter weeds such as dandelions and other shorter, broad-leafed weeds seem unaffected.

I've never really cared what my lawn is made of, just so it's fairly green. My experience has been that the more often I mow at a neighborhood lawn height, the more the weeds die & grass takes over. Weeds don't seem to like being cut, whereas grass does.

Oh stop now! (aka keep it comin')

So far I've only used my dad's Caroni TM1900 flail. Can't believe I haven't bought my own, yet, until I look at my bank account & see the $$$ flyin' out to pay for tractor payments, fencing, a well, electric hook-up, etc etc etc :)

No I wont stop:laughing: until every rotary mower has been replaced with a flail mower and the flailmower replaces the belly mower on every lawn and garden tractor of which I am working on as we speak.

The main reason I ask is because I wanted to seed in either rye or winter wheat while i still can...the optimum planting dates have me planting right now......with all the left over debris I'm not sure if I can wait for it to break down enough to plant through it. I have a bottom plow and I gave that a whirl on a few passes just to see......the debris just accumulated and eventually popped my plow right out of the ground.....I'm going to buy a disk tomorrow and give it a try.....Being new to all of this all advise is appreciated and will apply.

Try doing this again except tie a chain under the tractor so that it drags in front of the plow. Depending on the nature of the growth, it may very well drag it enough for the plow to cut as you would like.

My $0.02,
