Heart Healthy Eating

I do not think the salt is being used as a preservative in this case. I think they are brining the meat to add water weight to drive up costs and make the meat more tasty. Mostly more weight though, salt water is cheap and can make meat more expensive. :D

Yeah, when my mom used to make sweet tea she would put in massive amounts of sugar. I stopped drinking sweet tea after I stopped at a Hardees for dinner. I had been working all day on some land I owned and was on the way home. The tea was good but sweet. I got 15 minutes down the road with another 15 minutes to go when my stomach started to rumble. It was a very painful drive that seemed to last an eternity before I got home. :D

Tain't touch sweet tea since then. I do not know if the tea made me sick because of the sugar or if the big tea pot needed cleaning. I have heard that the big tea pots do not always get cleaned as they should. In any case, no more tea for me.

Beer, water or coffee. Two of the three boil or almost boil the water.

Later,
Dan

Dan.....I once was talking to the fella that cleaned our offices...I was working late one evening and in our discussion he mentioned he did the cleaning at one of the restaurant chains in town...He said what stopped he and his wife from going there was when he saw them empty the garbage out of a trash can and rinse it out...no soap..just rinse it out and dump in bags of ice topped with sweat tea...and they dipped it out of there..it was a high volume restaurant and the servers would just dip their pitchers in there and then go serve the tea...that is when I stopped drinking sweet tea...YUK !

We really like eating
quinoa, just get the prewashed variety. It can be bland but you can add what ever you want to it. Its also gluten free.
Quinoa with Chickpeas and Tomatoes Recipe - Allrecipes.com
is a recipe i will be trying soon.

My woman made a batch of this, following the directions precisely. I thought it was pretty good ... In fact here's an idea:

When you try a recipe that is posted in here, rate it on a 1 - 10 scale.

I'd rate that Quinoa with Chickpeas and Tomatoes recipe an 8 / 10.

Where do you buy Quinoa ? I found it at our local grocery store, Kroger and they wanted $5.00 + for a very small package of it...too pricey...do you have a better place to buy it...?

She got it at our local Publix grocery store, but wasn't easy: She had a manager & 2 other employees leading her around the store looking for it, since they knew they had it, just weren't sure where ... & also not cheap here, either: I think she said it was $8 for the box, but tried to justify it with, "But it makes a lot ... I think" Remains to be seen whether or not it becomes a staple of our kitchen.

Just found this post. Right on. I went to plant-based vegan diet about 3 years ago and it has been great. I dropped 35 lbs in 6 months and another 15 over the next 6 months. All my numbers are in line now (cholesterol down from 220 to 130; BP down from 150/120 to 109/70; etc.)
Schweizer, you are on the money. Personally I believe that 95% of all disease can be prevented and/or reversed by eating the proper diet.
I grew up on meat and dairy and I still get a hard time when I visit "home", but I'm healthier than any of them.
The comment about processed food is right on also. We don't eat hardly anything out of a box or a can. Mostly we eat fresh veggies and beans. I didn't wait until I had some kind of heart problem. I decided to be proactive and prevent it.
When my doctor saw all my progress and results, he said, "Good for you, but people don't want to hear that. They want a pill or a quick fix. I'm proud of you but I have no fear of going out of business because most Americans aren't really interested in making the commitment."
All I can say is it works. I got started after reading "Eat to Live" by Dr. Fuhrman, but I have read a lot about Esseltyn also. (I probably butchered his name). Keep the plant based program going!!

To reverse heart disease, like I'm trying to do, or to prevent heart disease like others here are trying to do it is important to eliminate the intake of cholesterol and saturated fats. All animal products contain saturated fats and cholesterol that is why "Heart Healthy Eating" is plant based.

On a personal note, my grandfather, on his farm, had the kind of meat you describe. He died after a long illness of heart disease at age 63.

Bo Fuller, welcome to this thread. Your Doctor is so right, neither he or the meat producers will ever have to worry about money. 85% of the people who have confirmed heart disease and have had some kind of procedure, do not change their diet significantly. You are ahead in the game of life.

I had a person tell me, after I told him the way I eat, that he could never eat like that because he loves food too much. I told him I love life too much.

I see you are vegan, would you say you are fat free vegan, that is not adding any oils or fats to your food? For me that has been the most difficult part in this reversal process, especially when eating out. There are always plenty of veggies but they have added oils, butter, cheese or bacon.

Brin, That is the most interesting roll I've seen with the purple in the middle. I'm going to pick up an egg plant next time I go to town. If it turns out good I'll have to plant some in the garden.
I got some firm "extra" tofu and a different marinade I'm going to try the FF tofu again.

I think this is the Quinoa we got
