Eaton Char Lynn 291-515-1 Hydraulic Power Steering Valve 291 515 1 | eBay

Wondering how to identify flow rating (gallons per minute) and displacement (cubic inches per revolution) of Char Lynn steering valves similar to this? They usually show a nine or ten digit number on the nameplate but I also see ordering information in the Char Lynn catalog. The catalog shows a 30 digit number identifying all the options such as flow rating and displacement.

What I'm looking for, I guess, is a correlation between the two types of numbers.
Thanks for any help.

It is not easy to correlate 9 digit number to the 30 digit number. I have never seen a cheat sheet showing that the 109-*** is a __ series and 129*** is the __ series. Both of these numbers are examples.

Used to be that Eaton would list some of the more common 9 digit models in the data sheets for each series of stering unit. Not sure if they still do that today or not.

Do you suppose that is a marketing ploy making it difficult to identify a used product? One would think that at least a serial number would be present so that the model could be identified by the manufacturer.
Makes we wonder how a rebuilder would know part numbers to order for replacement.

Edit: Thanks for your feedback.

I would give them a call, worst they can do is tell you to get lost.

I had a used valve made by Husco that came out of a forklift which I was trying to find some information on. A 10-minute phone call to them and I had all the information I needed about the valve including how to convert it to power beyond.

Thanks to your feedback, I was encouraged to do some more online searching and found this:

It gives the basic specs for the nine or ten digit number. Very helpful!

Edit: This is actually the starting page for identication:

That's interesting as I didn't know one could be converted to power beyond! Do you remember how its done? Most of the power beyond ones I've seen have the fifth port which I could definitely use for my project.

npalen,
Just an FYI: Danfoss recently purchased Eaton but I am 99% certain this acquisition is so new that Eaton tech support is still a viable option.

Agree that every unit I have seen with power beyond had the fifth port.

It has a 5th port with a plug in it. They said to remove the plug (3/4" ish SAE fitting) and put a 1/2" NPT steel hex plug (installed with an allen wrench) in one of the ports.
