Symptom: I have a new Linksys 8 port router.

Upshot, I can see other pc's, I can get onto internet, HOWEVER, when I log into a "HttpS" sight (with the S on the end) I get "page cannot be displayed" error. If the site does NOT have the S on the end, I can access it easily. Since (for work) most of the sites I access have the S on the end, this is presenting me with a problem /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

This was working fine BEFORE the swap from 4 port router to 8 port router (both Linksys)

Other pc's in office CAN log into httpS sites, so I'm fearing it's something buggered on mine.

I went to install Netscape, to see if maybe I had a virus (norton DID find/kill one) and when I try to log onto internet now, using Netscape, I get another error "the connection was refused when attempting to contact (homepage)"

Any ideas???

I ran norton, it found 1 virus and because of time (and how long it was taking) I had to finally quit. It was in process of checking my (physical) D drive when I stopped it, so I presumed it was done with C.

???

thanks for any thoughts

Richard

OH, Win XP-pro if that helps

well, I dont know what happened, but it's now (evidently) fixed. I uninstalled NOrton and REinstalled it. I now have access to those secure sites (??)

oh well, mine isn't to question why...

Gotta love firewall's, routers and anti-virus software.

https is secure protocol, called SSL (secure socket layer). It is meant to encrypt data between the host and your browser session.

Seems that maybe the norton stuff just plain old got confused and maybe was blocking a port it shoulkd not have. https usually goes over port 443.

The problem these days is all the vendor products seem to overlap. They do everything, but not just the one thing you need them to do very well.

Anyway, seems like you have fixed your problem?

Hi Mike, well, my problem is "better" but as it seems, not fixed.

I'm not at office now, but there are some secure sites that I'll go to (and seemed to work after I 'fixed' it) but when I fill out the log in and hit "enter", I still got "page not found".

Earlier, I coudn't even get to the log in screen without the error, so when I tried later and got the sign in page I jumped to conclusion that it was fixed. It has only taken a step in that direction.

I won't be there til monday to worry about it...

oh, I tried to login same site on another pc, and THAT pc worked fine, so it seems to be something more with my pc, than perhaps the router.

Richard, I'm sure no computer expert, but I had a somewhat similar problem not long ago and learned just a little bit about "configuring" Norton's firewall. You can set it to block individual sites, allow access to individual sites, "automatically" configure for various sites, and allow or block ads and pop-ups. So, I'm strictly guessing, but suspect you might be able to open the firewall, and configure it to allow (if I remember right, it uses the word "permit") the specific sites you're interested in.

Richard, we had a similar problem with our 4 port Linksys wireless router a couple of weeks ago. We could get on some sites but not others. Drove me nuts. I even posted a thread about it here, and called my service provider. They suggested my router might be involved. I unplugged it, plugged it back in 30 seconds later, and all was fixed!

Forgot about that one, Don. I've just got a 4 port U.S. Robotics router (only use one port) and I've had exactly the same problem you had; just unplug it and then power it back up.

Richard,

Do you have an owners manual with your new Router?
When I put mine in, if I recall correctly there was some setup on the router itself.

What virus did you have?
I got one on mine a couple weeks ago and it corrupted TCP/IP. I could see other PC's on the network but couldn't get to the internet. Norton cleaned up the virus but it didn't clear the damage.

Most of the little braodband router/hubs have a hardware firewall on them but unless you changed settings the default setting shouldn't be a problem w/ SSL but I would check there first. I would also look at IP, Gateway, DNS and DHCP settings between the router and your pc.

To see if you can resolve the domain you are trying to hit try pinging it from a command prompt using its domain not it's IP. Or a tracert to see if it is traveling to where it is supposed to be going.

Good luck,
Kevin

Bird I (think) I’ve totally disabled firewalls, zone alarm, everything (temporarily of course) to try to get this to see something, then I figure I’d have the culprit located.

OkeeDon.. I’ve unplugged, reset till blue in face, something is buggered on my pc as I’ve now narrowed it down (by virtue of other pc in office working fine for same locations)

Bczoom, yes owners manual (on cd), I have no idea what virus, I just saw it deleted when I was doing a whole system check.

MossRoad, I upped to an 8 port because all 4 on this one are full and we’re going to get a (networkable) laser printer and I need a port

Khd.. interesting. I’m not that knowledgeable about pinging, but I’ve done it.

Monday when I return to office, I’ll keep slugging at it.

The good/bad news is, Tuesday I’m heading to Vegas (darn) for a seminar (yuck). Leave Tuesday, return late Saturday. Then the next Wednesday, I’m driving up to Chicago and back.

So, if I don’t get it fixed “now”, it’s essentially going to wait 2 weeks. My biggest fear was that ALL the secure sites were blocked and my office would be really messed up in my absence.

First rule of troubleshooting...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Just kidding.

However, if it worked on the 4 port, then you swapped out for an 8 port and it stopped working, you should put the 4 port back in and see if it works again. If it works with the old one, I'd suspect the new router. If it doesn't work with the old one, I'd suspect something on the PC has changed.

Also, instead of changing out the router, you could just add a 10/100 switch. They are very inexpensive and come in many configurations from 4 to 24 ports and just about any number in between. Sometimes that is easier than re-configuring routers and such.

Well, where the heck where ya last week when I decided to do this foolhardy exercise? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, it did cross my mind, but space in closet made the 8 port easier.

Came in today & could'nt get onto internet AT ALL, nada, zippo, zilch.

Long story short, I rebooted several times, rebooted router, rebooted modem.

I then went upstairs and THAT pc worked flawlessly...yes, even on internet /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Now I'm realizing something is buggered with my pc and I was getting ready to delete/reinstall all my network connections (tcp/ipx) and I had a faint acknowledgement in the back of my head that I'd reformat if I needed to... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sat down to start deleting/reinstalling network connections, then it hit me. I looked over, reached down, picked up the wire connecting pc to wall outlet and plugged it in /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Now before y'all think I was being that dumb last week when I had this issue, I only unplugged it at the END of friday so that I could run norton and leave for day (time disallowed me to stay with it). I pulled chord out of wall and put in across my desk so I'd see it today. I wanted it disconnected from internet since I'd turned all safety switches off.

Anyway, I plugged it in today and everything is working fine, secure sites and all.

Dunno if perhaps it was a virus it found friday or not.

All I know is it's now working, and as you suggested, I ain't fixing it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ahh! Yes. Well at least you got past the power problem.

Hey, another reason to go wireless... look at it that way!

If you are using the router for DHCP quite probably the plug/unplug caused a refresh/renew and the new router gave you one of its IP's

Glad its working now......

Kevin

DOH! 2nd rule of troubleshooting...

If no one saw you do it, get out of there! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
