Help with Post hole digger disassembly

I have a Leinbach post hole digger that the seal leak like a screen door. It is the normal sized unit which I think is rated to 40hp.

I pulled most of it apart and am having a problem with finishing the disassembly. I have the top off and got the "large" gear out but don't know how to get the small gear and post out. The small one is the one that the PTO shaft connects to. The shaft has a seal on the outside that is installed crocked. It still turns fine but really leaks and leaks bad. It also appears to be a tapered bearing of some sort. I thought the PTO post will drive in but I tried that several times without success. On the inside I have the gear so it will not go through to the outside and I figure it would be hard to seat it from the inside to it only makes sense that the whole shaft must go inward to be removed. I also have NO idea how to remove the seal(also tapered bearing maybe). I also was wondering where I should get the new seals since I can't find anyone around here that has a clue to where I can buy them. Any help would be great!!!!

Give Leinback Machinery a call. I have always found them more than helpful. They can also advise you how to disassemble the gear box on the post hole digger.

Thanks - I see it lists a clip below the oil seal... that maybe part of it. Now to find out how to get the seal out to check for the clip?

The clip is there or the ring gear would have shoved the bearings out of the case.

If it's high on one side use a small screwdriver and hammer on the outside diameter of the seal to knock it inward. When it distorts inward just a little do the same thing on either side, the seal should come out.

You don't need to tear anything else apart but you should grease the lip of the new seal before installing it.

Is there a metal piece to the seal or is it just rubber. I have no idea what I am looking at because it is all painted and appears to be installed incorrectly.

The seal is most likely metal with a ring of rubber that seals against the shaft. It will look like a very shallow cup with a large hole punched in the bottom. I have seen a very, very few where the entire metal piece is covered in rubber, but removal and installation is the same in either case, crush it back a little and it will come out.

Seals are a standard item. Any NAPA, ORileys, etc. should be able to match them up. Take the old seal with you. Would be helpful to know the shaft size, bore diameter and width of the seal if it was destroyed removing it. Install it with the lip toward the inside of the case and like was said, lube the lip of the seal.

I went to NAPA and they could only locate one set that "may" match up - the two little seals were $51 - ouch!
I think I am going to call the company in the morning and see if they sell the parts and how much.
Any one line places for seals?

May? Some question as to the size or something? Sounds pretty high priced too. Special freight charge? Baum Hydraulics (baumhydraulics.com) sell seals online, but probably not the cheapest route. Could check their price and see how it compares (or post the size and I can look in their book). I'm sure there are others that sell online, but I always get that kind of stuff local. Pretty rare when this NAPA doesn't have what I need, and most everything can be had the next day with no freight charge.

I ended up calling the company and getting them for about $20. They were great and were even able to figure out what model I have (Since there were no markings)
