I remember when I was a kid, we built a pole barn using our own native maple lumber. When the maple dried it was too hard to put a nail in. We had to use a drill before putting any nails in the maple.
My friend reused 3 inch tongue & grooved maple for his flooring that had come out of a long ago demolished roller skating rink. He had to pre-drill every nail hole. 25 years later and he still cusses that install.
