If it had been in perfect condition, it might have been worth it. I suppose shells are available, although I don't recall seeing any of late...12 and 20 are plentiful though. If you have a 28 gauge, shells probably are a challenge. I recently bought a 20 gauge Winchester Model 12, manufactured in 1937; very good condition. Twenty gauges you don't see every day, especially for $250.

If it had been in decent shape I would have bought it. The blueing was all worn off, so I might have paid 70 if it worked.
I would like a side by side 16 gauge Stevens, but probably wouldn't like the price.I left home one day without shells for my 20, and rather than buy yet another box I picked up a New England Firearms 28. I usually buy a box of shells at Dick's in early fall else they won't have any.

I have never fired a 28 gauge. I used to shoot trap, and I know the skeet shooters use them, but my Dad was a died-in-the wool 12 gauge (Model 12) fan and a lot of that rubbed off on me. How are they on game? Recoil?

I have never tried a 28 gauge on game. It shoots sweet at skeet. The recoil is pretty bad, worse then my Browning XT trap.

Now this guy knows how to handle a shotgun; no recoil, but it looks like he needs a new catalytic converter.

That appears to be a Browning 525. Since they are so light it actually recoils pretty good.

Any idea why they are protected? they are a nuisance animal here in Texas and you can kill them year round, any way you want. When I lived in California, one of the craziest states in the country for animal protection laws, they allow you to shoot beavers 24/7 all year round. It's one of the few animals you can hunt at night time with spotlights!!!! There are no limits and there are almost no rules, they just want as many killed as possible because of all the damage they do to the canals in the SF Delta. Instead of building homes in the middle of ponds, they dig tunnels and caves into the sides of the canals that break from time to time causing flooding and massive losses to farmland and a huge expense to rebuild the damaged sides to the canals.
They are one of the few things in Arkansas that you can kill as a nuisance animal also. Just about anything that walk, crawls or flies is protected unless there is a hunting season on it.

If you were closer I might take you up on that. A bolt does seem odd in a shotgun, but they are out there.
Yep, I recently found and bought a 16 gauge model 97 pump shotgun for $200 that was in really good shape. IIRC it was made in 1904 according to the serial number. The problem with a 16 gauge is paying the premium for shells. When you can find them regular 7 1/2 lead shot will be $17 per box when the same shells in 12 gauge will be only $6.

That's like the 28. I only allow myself one box per year, then I switch to the 20. If I was really hardcore I'd get into reloading.

I really don't notice the recoil, I like it because it's light to carry and come to my shoulder nicely.

They are just a large rodent. Unless you ask someone from the college out in Oregon. Crazy mascots in Oregon, Beavers and Ducks.

This I didn't know. Guess it's nice to be a beaver in Canada!!!!

"Beavers are protected here because they are Canada's national animal."

Not true, at one time beavers were over trapped for the pelts to the point of near extinction and consequently declared an endangered species.

Problem is the beaver is basically a rodent and as such breeds like one resulting now in an overpopulation.

Nobody buys fur any more thanks to Bridgit, even the London (queen's guards) now wear synthetic hats.
Also I believe felt hats like worn traditionally by most gents used beaver fur to make the felt. But who today wears a fedora?

About the only fur trade left is with Russia and again only certain pelts are popular.
As a youngster I used to see trappers every spring going after muskrats, no more.

Seal hunting was once an east coast mainstay but again killed by Bridget, consequently certain fish populations are being devastated from the overabundance of hungry seals.

Heck who in his right mind is going to trudge in cold water to set a trap line for maybe $10 a pelt not forgetting, skinning, drying, tanning etc etc. Also the trapper now can only use a so called 'humane trap' costing $$$'s.
No ROI in trapping!

Fur prices also are controlled by Russian and Chinese markets. Right now the economies of both countries stink; which has deflated fur prices for the last two years.

I wish that you guys would stop sending your lynx down here. :D Once thesy cross the border they become an "endangered species", despite the fact that you guys trap (and hunt?) them. The regulations for equipment are getting so stringent that many trappers I know are leaving their steel in the shed this year. Too bad, because the coyote population was just getting low enough so that the deer are starting to recover.
