Hooks on Bucket

   / Hooks on Bucket #61
I have just used the Bolt on hooks that you get at Harbor Freight. They are not grab hooks but work great. I have had them on 3 tractors. The good thing is that they are about $10 each with bolts included. A 2" receiver in the middle is a nice addition as well. Gives you all the flexibility you could ever want.

I attempted to find those hooks but was unsuccessful. Would you be kind enough to post a link?

Thanks,

Don

Those may not be as strong as the Horrible Fright specs say that are-imagine that LOL. And yes that's the hooks that bent, not the bucket:

There have been many copiers of the original Toyota hooks. I wonder if the originals are stronger than the copies.

Before I knew better, decades ago I used two of those 10k tow hooks, spaced about 4 feet apart on the bucket, bolted on without backup plates. They were the only option I could find to bolt on.

Worked fine until I used both hooks to centralize a heavy lift with one chain at the center of the bucket. (Y formation) The hook mounts weren't wide enough for the resulting side pull so it bent the bucket sheetmetal under the hooks. The height of those hooks compound the problem by putting extra sideload leverage on their mounting surfaces.

Next tractor, I used bolt-ons that were specifically designed for that application.

Either buy Kenny's bolt on hooks, or if you can weld, and know what you are doing, buy good forged weld on hooks MADE for that purpose, just like Kenny does and make sure there is sufficient steel under them to prevent bending/tearing your metal. I hate to say it, but a lot of things at Harbor Freight are made out of peanut butter. Seriously.

This is an example. I am not saying you need to buy them at Amazon, but this will give you an idea. I buy mine at a big local hardware store in Harrison Ar.

We sell plenty of weld-on stuff too, in addition to laser cut backing plates.

There you go, a one stop shop, either way you want to go.

I had a set of Ken’s hooks on the JD 855 and liked them.

Maybe saving a few bucks is not worth it, but normally I do not lift anything heavy with the FEL. I have forks now for that. Hooks would be handy.

iF bolt is good quality and correctly sized it will survive any pulling you can load it with, chain will probably be first place to expect failure.... Welds of hooks (not commercially made and proof tested) probably second place failure will occur...

I am using a 1/4 inch chain proof tested to 1,250 pounds with two bolts rated at 12,000 lbs tensile strength (for each slot bracket or shackle mount) on a tractor the can only apply 1400 pounds ground/traction weight... Don't see my bolts failing, maybe pulling through base material first....

Very nice idea

I sort of did my own thing.... I could make these for about 1/3 the cost of "other" options...

About 2 feet of 2 X 1/4 inch angle iron, 6 bolts (grade 8), 6 nuts, 12 flat washers, 6 lock washers...

Very nice Idea
