How fast does a big tractor go?

Pretty fast: . Mr. Kankkunen whipped a Valtra T234 tractor up to a speed of 130.165 km/h which is 80.88 MPH.

That's sort of what it looked like. I'd hate to get in it's way. Looked like the driver need to get someplace quick.



Do you need to dump on everything?

Hey I think it's a lot of fun blasting down the autobahn doing 130 in a Volvo station wagon and zipping right on by the police who won't give you a second look. I wish we could. I love Germany especially Bavaria, the beer is most excellent. BTW they don't sell Volvos like that over here.

I'm sure it's different on a bigger tractor, especially with a cab, but 17 feels plenty fast on my Kubota.

My 8N with a Sherman over-under was rated to do 23 in 4 hi at wot according to the sales literature. That would be absolutely terrifying!!

I've done that on my 8n. Not bad at all.

My Kubota will top 20 mph downhill. The steering is pretty sketchy at that speed. I recently drove a forklift on the road. Forklifts are pretty fast, but I couldn't reach top speed because the steering was terrible.

M8540 speed hits 21.5 occasionally reeds 22mph. Newholland T4000 series had a 40 kph option 25mph

By big I mean probably 80HP plus.

Background - We were driving along RT24 in Alabama which is finishing construction. We were doing about 50mph along with the rest of traffic. In a steady stream of oncoming traffic (going about the same speed) came a big tractor doing about 50. I had difficulty seeing it because the sun angle was low and I was contending with traffic.

It almost looked like it might be a construction dedicated tractor single seat, no side-by-side.

I've seen tractors in Europe routinely going at fairly high speed, but not many around here (northeast Mississippi).

So how fast does your big tractor go?

My brother writes for several ag publications (free-lancer) and gets invited to a lot of machinery events...he said the primary goal in the industry now is "road speed". Figure with huge fields and expensive equipment, makes sense to be able to move quickly from one field to the next.

Probably easier than local trailering too, especially if the destination is within 30-50 miles, faster to just drive than load, bind, drive, unbind, unload, etc.

I've seen tractors pulling a trailer with a car/truck axle they ran off the PTO. It pushed the tractor at a pretty good speed, it could easily keep up with traffic.

How do you adjust the speed farther than the throttle will allow.

IDK, I just ran the numbers through a calculator and 540rpm turning a 2.65 axle ratio with 33"tires works out to 20mph. Another gearbox maybe? I remember not that long ago reading about Amish in the Crofton-Hopkinsville area of Western,Ky. getting tickets for it.

You get up around 18 mph or so on an big old open station tractor with a little loosy goosy steering [ bouncing up and down thru the total range of your seat ], and that is plumb fast enough.....

The Kubota 135X I ran 23.5 mph without any twitchiness.

My neighbor has a Fastrac that will go over 40 mph. I don't know which model he has though.

Agricultural Tractors

JCB Fastrac was what came to mind reading the first post.

One local water board hires a company every year to clean sediment from their ponds. They use Fastracs with liquid manure spreaders to haul the sediment to local fields, those things really move down the road.

Or a 1000 rpm pto, A different gear ratio maybe?

big tractor usually = 1000rpm pto...

Lot of mass for a pto clutch to get going ... external clutch ?+ trans needed. :confused3:
