It has about 2X the horsepower that my dad's little craftsman did. Runs great & has enough umphh to keep going even after the chain is dull.

Nice lookin' saw, the Stihl's were the first thing to disappear from my Dad's shop after he died. Took me a week to get there but my brother and brother-in-law only had a short walk. The old guy who helps me with trees that need to fall some other way just bought a Jonsurd, and he's relly impressed. I'll stick to my Husky, thank you very much.

Don't be to upset with your wood delivery. The wood doesn't always split into perfect quarters. when I buy wood I am usually more upset with lenght. I have a small stove and when I specify 16" I don't want 20' lenghts. I always end up splitting and trimming some of it.

I know yor stove is new from your other postings. I don't know if you have burnt wood before. In the pic of your stove there is a bucket I assume is your ash can. If I may be so bold as to offer a piece of unsolicited advice I would suggest a covered ash can.
One with a tight fitting lid will suffocate any lit embers. Then when you get rid of them you don't risk a fire. Plus the lid keeps the house much cleaner.

The bucket in question is for my kindling (sp?). I dump the ash pan into a steel garbage can in the garage (with a tight fitting lid). I would like to get a covered bucket for the transfer from the stove to the garage. I don't usually burn the stove during the day, so when I clean out the ashes they are no longer a fire threat, only a dust threat. Thanks for your concern.

I've stacked many a cord of wood that my dad had delivered, the batch I just got is far & away the worst I've ever seen. I guess next time I'll try to find someone with one of those firewood processing machines, At least the lengths should be consistent.

Spending a couple of days in my woods + renting the splitter isn't sounding as bad considering that I will have to process the wood I just paid $175 for.

If you buy 6 cords at $175.. you could pay for your own splitter. Think of it this way.. if you cleared $20 an hour working a regular job.. it would take over a full day's pay to pay for the cord.

I bought a Troy built 27 ton w/ 6.5 Honda.. after not having a splitter for two seasons.. it's paid for itself in heating & labor costs. I always thought I could sell some cords to make up the costs.. but for now I've just been happy splitting my own.

I usually split the tasks up.. throughout the year I spot the dead or fallen trees.. and will cut and drag the logs back to the barn.. some logs I save for the chainsaw mill to make lumber.. the scraps go into the firewood pile. Once I have half a dozen or more logs stacked up at the barn.. I plan a day to cut them up and pile to be split. I use the concrete platform at the back of the barn as my splitting station.. and stack the wood inside the first level of the barn to stay dry and cure. So on some days I'm just dragging.. on others just cutting & piling.. and finally just splitting.

I always bring the wood to the splitter.. my main reason is the creek I always have to cross.. the spliiter would almost be totally submurged being towed crossing the creek.

It's hard work.. but I enjoy it!

Hazmat.. I have two Stihl's myself.. an older one.. 028AV WoodBoss.. and the 046 Magnum. I was trying to get a replacement sprocket for the 028 this week.. and noticed a posting for a recall notice on some of the newer Stihl models.. has to do w/ a fuel leak. Just wanted to make sure you knew.. I believe you can see the models listed in the recall on the Stihl website.

I have cut apple trees before, they made great fire wood but they are one of the worse trees to cut and have the hardest limbs to deal with. I think you did quite well for all you accomplished.

I like cutting firewood. Most of my gathering has been cutting tops left over from a logging operation on my neighbors land.
I would rather cut the whole tree than to deal with tops. I have a small trailer that holds almost a cord of wood. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to fill it with 18" lengths.

If I was cutting the whole tree I think I could fill the trailer in less than two hours. Most of a tree's wood comes from the trunk, and certianly the fastest piece to cut into stove lengths.

Splitting nice straight grain wood is a treat and I think I can beat a hydraulic splitter for the first hour. I am looking at the supersplit wood splitter that woks on the flywheel principle with a rack and pinion. The cycle time is around 4 or 5 seconds instead of 15 seconds or so with most hydraulics.

You can not beat wood cutting and splitting for one of the best workouts around.
