25 years with volunteer fire company's around the area then I burned out and put my self out to pasture
I did the last 15 years with company and was chief engineer for 10 of them and got out when it wasn't fun any more.
The required training was taking a toll on a lot of the volunteers in our area.

Joined in 1970 and still going. Been up through the ranks including 7 years as chief. Did training and EMS in the past and am one of the Safety Officers now. I am a 3rd. generation volunteer and still love it. (lots of business with Jerome Fire by my TFD.)

Started in public/private EMS for 5 years, then 22 years career firefighter/paramedic/arson investigator, retired in 2002, volunteer firefighter/paramedic ever since, went into ER nursing as an RN, still ride the private ambulance and teach EMS part time at the Junior College.

I have only lived n places that have professional firefighters. I had a couple of volunteer firefighters that I worked with. They primarily did it for the pension. The state takes one percent of insurance premiums and sets it aside for this pension fund. Works great for volunteers.

I think most all the firefighters are professional volunteer and career.

I wish our state would do the pension thing for the volunteer's it would keep more people involved (including me).

My department has a pension system. We get money set aside for each call we make, training or event we attend...etc...We get to draw this as a "retirement" when we reach a certain age...

Personally I would LIKE to be a Vol EMT, but I'm not sure I have enough spare time to make it worth it to them...

Have you contacted the organization that you wish to join? Find out what the minimum requirements are. I know for my Fire-Rescue department we don't have any minimum attendance requirements, but we do require all new members to complete Firefighter 1 training (162 hours) within 18 months of joining.

I strongly suggest you find out more info. Once you get in, I think you would be able to find the time.
