Here's a few bad pictures of the basement project. I'm working on getting the ceiling done. Part of the ceiling is drywall and part is drop. I also still have to put in a nice set of stairs.

So are you also using a sewage pump to get the waste up to the first floor level?

Yep, that's the only option I had short of putting in a septic for that one bathroom.

Got the concrete in today.....not as bad a job as I thought it would be. It took 20 60lbs bags of concrete. Tomorrow I'm off to purchase the shower stall and the shower valve. Then I'll frame in the closet where the sewage pump goes, plumb the supply lines with pex, insulate then drywall.........it just never seems to end!!!!

The ceiling tiles in the pictures are not done because the nimrod that estimated how many tiles to order (which would be me) didn't get enough and it takes Amrstrong over a month for special orders.

That's what I thought - just got a little confused with what you said about the builder and pool. Glad to see everything went well. You've finished the toughest part of the job. The rest is downhill from here.

For the shower valve - look at moen. Two advantages:

1. If you screw up and plumb the hot and cold to the wrong sides - it is easily fixed by removing and turning around the cartridge.

2. The valve can be easily repaired/replaced in the future without having to tear into the wall. All you need to do is take the handle and trim off and replace the cartridge.

Also - ball valves to isolate the bathroom plumbing for repairs are a good thing to have (having to turn off the house water suppy to do a simple repair is a real pain).

Good Luck.

That's good to know about Moen. I was going with them anyways as that's what's in the rest of my house and I have this thing about uniformity. It had not occured to me to put in shut off's to this bath. I will definitely do that! Not looking forward to cutting into the water lines in the ceiling of the bathroom. Being so low I'm guessing every bit of water in the house is going to drain out on me.

The other advantage of the shut-offs is that you won't be time pressured by the spouse and kids to turn the water back on while working on the bathroom.

Moen is definitely the best even today.

Hi all,

I'm in the process of finishing my basement. I need to cut a trench in the concrete to plumb in a sewage pump and to put in the actual basin. I had though I would rent a concrete saw but all I can find are gas units which would put out too much exhaust. Any other suggestions on how to cut through the floor fairly neatly? I had also thought about a jack hammer but I sure would think scoring the outline first would make a nicer job of it.

Jeff

First you find out the depth of the concrete. Find a saw that will cut to that depth. If possible use electric, otherwise if your using a gas saw you should have a intake fan and a exhaust fan. A oxygen monitor is always a good idea, and do not work alone. Your concrete saw should have a water attachment to keep the dust down, if not then you can just spray the blade during cutting. Earplugs are also recommended.

Add that. Check for smoke alarms befoe starting any gas equipment. Ask what happens when you fire up a chainsaw under one.

FYI: As per his posts in this thread, the OP cut his floor, and finished this job nearly 6 years ago.
