Hp required for 3 point chipper?

I am interested in putting a Jinam chipper on a tractor with 28hp at the PTO.

The spec on the chipper is 15-50 HP.

Does anybody have any insight as to what sort of performance can be expected with 28 HP?

You should be fine . I ran a 21hp with a 3pt chipper and only had to back off if I got into bigger limbs . 4" is fine over that in hardwood might make her smoke a bit!

I have a 6" Jinma on a 24 pto hp tractor. Just keep the rpm up and the blades sharp. Fresh cut wood isn't much of a problem, old dry wood can really make her chug.

I have the 6" Jimna and have run it for years with my JD870......28 HP tractor. Has plenty of power to operate it. Never any issues. Just dont get ahead of yourself when feeding larger logs into it or it could jamb up in the chute.

As long as chips are flying out...all is well. I chip bull pine, branches from fir and tamarack.

If it does clog up, not to hard to clear out. Remove the chute, blow out the crud.

So how big dia. branch will this thing chip with 24 HP?

Is it just a matter of backing off the feed when chipping big stuff?

My old Deere had 24 PTO HP and ran a Woods 5000 chipper (5" capacity). There was no problem whatsoever. Just load the branch or trunk in the chute (gravity feed), step back and let the chipper do the work.

I have a 5" BearCat with a blower on my 28 hp pto. The same as Roy's Woods unit I think but with the added blower. He and the others are right, you will be fine. After a little op time you will learn how to feed it. Keep the knives sharp - dirt and pebbles are bad. And chip green wood if you can - dryed wood is tougher. If I have a 5" piece I usually cut it into 18" or 24" lenghts before I drop it in the chute or I overload the blower.

Yep...blower is an option with the Woods. As I bought it used and I didn't want to spend another $750 for the blower kit, I can rake those chips.
Bearcat actually makes the 5000. Woods just markets them.

i have fed 6" max (at base) entire trees less the branches thru my Jimna (have 24hp pto with a 28HP tractor, and it worked fine. But usually i cut the 6" and larger for firewood. I generally am chipping 4" and smaller.

should be good, i run a woods 5000/bearcat unit on my 1070 35hp at 1200-1800 rpm it chippes faster at higher rpm but i cant feed it that fast even with someone helping me.

did you get the chipper?

I have my Jinma chipper hooked up to my NorTrac (Jinma)254 Tractor. I figure about 19 pto hp. I bought the chipper from Ronald at Ranch Hand in Virginia. He told me it would take a 6" log. It ate one 8 feet long. Did not kill the engine. Keep the blades sharp and it works great. The only thing it doesn't like is older dried out dirty limbs. Used it to clean up lake bank debrie. It did the job well. It just killed the edge on the knives. Changed out the knives and chips fly again. Ronald talked me into an extra set of knives. Great idea!!:thumbsup:

Those old limbs are tough going through any chipper. Fortunately, they burn quite well.

Don't know if YOU will be ok but the tractor and chipper should handle it well.

The only thing you need to watch is, if the chipper is gear driven, that you don't overload the chipper. If the chipper flywheel is belt driven...less of an issue since the belt(s) will slip first.
