How much tractor weight and HP is needed to pull something like this 10.5' Cat 1 field cultivator?

I'm going to guess it depends on what type of soil and terrain. I'd guess something in the 8k plus range for weight and probably 70+ for HP, real row crop tractors are a different animal.

I'm wanting to use it after running over things with a disk. I'm in the market for either a plow/disc/harrow combo for soil prep (I live in the Ozark foothills with lots of rock), or springing for a 6' tiller. I much prefer the tiller option, as I have broken lot of ground with a borrowed tiller, but they are climbing so fast in price I can't be sure to find a decent used one without driving three states away.

Your JD 2150 is probably more than plenty.

But that thing dont look anywhere near 10.5' wide.

Looks similar in size to a two row cultivators that were frequently used on corn and pulled behind N-series fords.

Its light weight and cat 1. That alone tells you that you dont need or want an 8000# tractor of 70hp.

That field cultivator isn't real heavy so I doubt it will pull hard, depending on soil moisture and hills your 2150 will probably handle it with no problem. It is definitely a tool for ground that is broken and not a primary tool.

I would say it's that wide... here is the pic from the rear. I agree that it's light duty, and - for what I will use it for - it probably will work just fine. It's not heavy enough to sink too low, and I can set the depth with my three point anyway. I mainly am wanting something to keep the soil tilled for a year or two before I buy a tiller, stuff that's already been broken with a tiller twice. I have a single-row six-tooth cultivator which worked pretty well last Spring, but I am welding on some pieces and removing tines to turn it into a disc-hiller, and it wasn't wide enough to cut out my tire tracks anyway, so something like this would make for an easier, dedicated harrowing operation.

Yes, I agree. Not trying to break any new grown, just maintain broken ground from being taken back over.

Put a tape measure on it and dont guess.

Either way, try it. If its too much, take the back outside tines off. If still too much, take the front outside tines off. Find what works.

But cultivators pull easy in already worked/planted ground

Probably work great for pulling rocks to the top for easy picking

we pulled an 18 1/2 foot with 3 rows of shanks with a 5000 Ford that had duals on it. Front got a little light with out added weight but no problem pulling in ground that had been mold board plowed the previous fall.

Obviously - as is or reduced in width - it should work just fine on broken ground.

These are awesome. I used mine yesterday to deep till my garden. It sinks down the full 18” and pulled easy with my MX.

Rocks and tillers dont go well together , A heavy disk might be a better option.

Depends on field conditions. For what you mention, going back through previously tilled ground to rip up weeds, a 50ish HP utility tractor like your 2150 would probably be fine, although if the soil is particularly heavy or dry and caked, you may need something with about another 20 HP and another ton of weight. We pulled a Deere field cultivator about that width with sweeps and a tine harrow with an 80 HP tractor and it never had any issues with it. That cultivator did also weigh a good ton or so, it was a lot heavier than the one you have. If you do find this is too much to pull with your 2150, remove shanks until it pulls it well.

MX5200 here with a 9 tine Fred Cain as well. It will sink deep on broken ground, but will take more work on new ground to get that deep. Second till is a breeze with it.
