I think I would take it to a good metal fab shop, that has experience welding aluminum, and let them have a go at it. The fact that there was fluid in it, and probably in the crack, will give them a little difficulty, but if they clean out the area and crack good, I think they'll have no problems.
I noted on my cooler that the weld area seems to be much more substantial than what is shown on others that cracked. In fact, I kind of like the more substantial weld than the washer fix, but time will tell.
