For those of you who have followed me from the beginning, I hope you guys aren't getting tire of me yet. You have help me a lot and I really appreciate it. The dealer has ordered my owner's manuel. Will be here Friday. But I need to prepare for some maintenance for Saturday. I bought 1 gallon of Rottela T, and a new oil filter. I bought a new fuel filter. I bought both air filters. I plan in buy new blades next payday, the 30th. The starter is being rebuilt as we speak. I don't understand the hydro-tranny. There is a screw on filter on the front on the rear axle, is this one that I want to replace? If so, is this the tranny filter? Do I plan on drainning it? And replacing it with what type of fluid? I prefer O'Rielly Auto, AutoZone, or Walmart. Is there any maintenance for the hydralics (hoses, fluid, fittings)?? Again thanks guys.

If you get the manual Friday review what you plan to service in the manual before you start into things over the weekend.

I have a '98 455. Great mowing unit. The screw on filter you refer to on the front of the transaxle is the hydro filter. There is also a drain plug. I don't recall the location but I think you can see it from the rear of the tractor. The dip/fill location is under the seat. Usually you need to slide the seat forward. Take the dip stick out first to reduce a vacuum and speed the draining. I run my tractor a bit first to warm up the fluid before draining. Once the fluid has drained spin off the filter and replace. You will most likely need a filter wrench to loosen it up. You will need a small funnel to put the new fluid in.

It helps to know the fill capacity so you know about how much to put in and stop a bit short to start checking the fill level. Take it slow filling as it goes in slow with such a small funnel. Refer to the manual but I think you check the fluid level with the stick not screwed in.

On what fluid to use. I use the recommended JD fluid. You going to buy fluid anyway and for me I would rather pay a little bit more and know what I'm putting in is right. I buy the larger pails at times for my 455 and 4410 but I keep a clean gallon jug to pour into first. Make it much easier to hold while you pour.

If you have not done so I would change the engine oil as well. I did all the fluids when I picked up my 455 so I knew where I was starting at. Great tractor. Take good care of it and it will take good care of you.
