Yes, this topic comes and goes, and comes and goes.

To the OP, though, if reliability were an issue, you would find it discussed here in length. So far, in the last 12 years or so, there have only been a very very few issues with either tranny type.

Yeah...this topic is like the .45ACP vs. 9 mm discussions on gun forums...never ending.

I carry a large cannon on the 7520 FEL. It has a gear tranny.

Yea, but 45ACP is like a 45-70. It is slow, heavy, and hits like a freight train. And, it leaves a big hole.

Actually, kinda like 12ga slugs...

Thats easy, 9mm has less recoil and more rounds in a smaller package.

In the house where size dont matter... 12ga!:laughing:

for kicks I got a 50AE and a 500mag revolver... the .50ae is ok to shoot.. the 500m revolver is a total hand cannon.. can't imagine what I'd ever use it for unless a heard of mad rhino's were atacking my house or something.. ( 460NE would have been a better balistic choice IMHO.. )

Each has its value and neither really is "better" than the other because each is better suited to different situations with different operators. One operator may be perfectly suited to a gear driven machine where another is better suited to an HST in the exact same situation. I have both, since getting the 855 a couple years ago, I have come to prefer the HST for my usage. But that's me and only my opinion.

Oh, I am known to carry either a 5" 1911 or a Glock 27 in .40. Next pistol, unless I am successful in talking myself out of it, will be in 9mm. :confused2:

The Hydro does not require the engine speed to be adjusted to speed up or slow down while working with the PTO. If your running a brush hog in a wide open field and have very little to work around gear would be fine but if there are rocks and stumps the hydro will allow you to ease up to things while not dropping the RPMs.

Not sure what to say. Had a 1983 B 6100 gear unit put 11,000 hrs on it with one clutch change. Didn't wear the lining out but broke the centre out of the clutch disc. We own a a marina and use the Kubotas primarily to move boats some over 25 ft. and 4,000 lbs. Bought a B7510 gear and it worked well..... then We hired employees. The clutch still lives but I want to tear peoples throats out when I hear them grinding gears or "crunching when trying to go into gear". We have gotten busy enough to buy a second tractor and went with a L 3400 HST. It seems larger to move around the boats, is definitely harder on fuel (I know it's larger but it also seldom idles which the gear tractor does often). My greatest concern is when my "boy's" are pulling boats up our ramp do they select low or at least medium and if they don't how much heat will the HST take before it's smoked. I am sure that the HST will be more to repair then the clutch but don't know if the gears will even it out if the (boy's) keep grinding gears. We also use these tractors for snow removal with FEL's and Blowers in winter (in northern Ontario) and I must say the Hst wins hands down here.

Not to mention being able to push really hard. Enuf torque transmitted to spin on good ground carrying a hydro its size with loaded tires.
