They must have been dumber than the "average" dumb criminal
Not necessarily. Back then to have a system sophisticated enough to detect their presence they would believe it's possible to have remote control pistols on them.

I have seen criminals run from armed LEO officers standing just a few feet away. If you have seen COPS you have too.

The fact that the dispatcher/call center stated, over a speaker, that remote pistols were present and ordered them to lay down is laughable. If in fact they did lay down then that is all the proof I need about their intellect. Dumber than average is being kind.

Guys breaking in to steal chainsaws and tools can't be geniuses...but you're missing an important point. I'm talking about something that happened almost 50 years ago. Today you can buy a motion detection light for less than $10. Back then it was sophisticated technology. That was pre- 911. What I said was: "Back in the early 1970s"
"it activated a cassette tape player which my boss had recorded a message on".
You're missing the point.

Just reading this thread makes me never want to leave my freedom in the hands of 12 of my "peers".

Watch the video below and half of you will think this is a clear cut case of self defense. The other half will think the shooter was clearly out of line and shooting the hypothetical "unarmed child trespasser" mentioned above.

Florida Man Who Shot And Killed A Black Man Over Parking Dispute Gets 2 Years : NPR

Florida Man Who Killed During Parking Dispute Gets 2 Years | Time

I see nothing about an unarmed neighbor kid taking a short cut. What I see is someone with a gun looking for trouble and found something to pick at. Unfortunately for the person who died he should not have jumped to pushing, shoving or punching as that is also the wrong way to handle the situation.
Does the neighbor kid plan on confronting me with a push or shove, when I say to him I prefer you not cut over my property next time?
I must say he (my neighbors kid) is getting big now but I still wouldn稚 need to pull a gun to deal with him if he did. Now if he was to come at me with a stick or his baseball bat the situation might change.
The bottom line here is not everyone who holds no regard for the life of a thief is going out starting trouble and the frequency of events like this are far, far less likely than the frequency of a thief, armed robber or even a bunch of young thugs looking to just do any kind of damage to someone.
Your example in short does not show the type of person the majority of gun owners are.

It's always satisfying to see a bully get what's coming to him; in this case, however, shooting and killing someone for pushing you down is a bit extreme. Maybe a shot to the knee cap would have been more apropos? I noted that the reporter told us that it was a white man shooting a black man right up front...it must have been important. However, the shooter must have gleaned some sympathy somewhere, as he seems to have gotten off light with 2 years. Bottom line...force begets force, and it's not always pleasant.

Michael Drejka got 20 years and had been problematic in the past. A pregnant woman with three kids parks in a convenience store handicapped spot when Drejka pulls up getting into an argument with her about not having handicapped card. Her boyfriend, kids Dad, shoves Drejka to ground and starts to walk away when Drejka shoots and kills him.
Drejka was looking for trouble and found it. Unfortunately a man died because of it.
Now at 2:40 a.m. this morning (!!!!!) we're sound asleep when my garage alarm goes off! I grab a flashlight, a 9mm, cell phone and run the 300ft and front walk in door is open! I call 911, turn lights on, no sign of forced entry. Police arrive in about 10 minutes. We couldn't see any sign of forced entry but it was very windy and chilly. Apparently (I can't figure it out) the metal door strike was shifted...door locked when I left and set alarm earlier.
Whole time I was thinking what to do had someone been running away or in garage?
Officer and I checked everything and I repaired door. Whole time his radio was going off with break in calls...apparently the wind and temperature change.

I've worried about this type of thing for a while now. I've been burglarized before, but not at our new house and each time was just riffling through our cars, nothing big. So recently I asked my neighbor about what he would do.

My neighbor is an Iraq veteran, Green Beret, and a higher ranking (can't remember and won't post his actual title) police officer. My initial plans have always been to run and get him. But he told me some sobering realities on home invasion:

1) Its almost always related to drugs. Drugs, drug money, drug weapons, etc.
2) His first and most important weapon in the house is his cell phone.
3) In the event of a home invasion; he would call 911, gather his family together behind a locked door, and only threaten an intruder if they were trying to get to him through that door.
4) Most people who are shot during a home invasion are the occupants loved ones.

Me - If someone was on my property, inside or out, I'd take a similar approach sans me being behind a locked door. Wife would be locked away with our dogs. I would go out, confront intruder and let them know the cops are coming. If they attack me, I'd try to string it out until the cops arrive to witness it. Simple as that. I'm a big target and can put up a fight. I'd be exceptionally loud too. You see, I could not live with myself if I shot a kid or got locked in a legal battle in which the scum-bag wins. But I'll gladly take a beating in order for them to get locked up. Knife or bullet wound? Not excited about it, but stand by my plan.

Wife might not agree to all of that though...

I always remember my Dad (rip) talking about putting yourself in harm's way.
I agree with the neighbor which is what I did 2:30 This morning seeing garage door open called 911 FIRST!
I would not have called 911 if doors were secure. It's possible to have a false alarm.
I would never take a bullet or beating on my property. I believe any normal rational person would investigate an alarm going off. A burglary actively going on? 911 immediately. Then appropriate action at the time based on what's happening.
It may be worse injuring someone than killing them lots of times if you get sued. However!
It's a tough call and you only have a few seconds to make the right or wrong choice.
I think it's better to err on side of caution. It's a whole lot easier to replace a car or truck than pulling the trigger and a lifetime of regret.
