I've worried about this type of thing for a while now. I've been burglarized before, but not at our new house and each time was just riffling through our cars, nothing big. So recently I asked my neighbor about what he would do.

My neighbor is an Iraq veteran, Green Beret, and a higher ranking (can't remember and won't post his actual title) police officer. My initial plans have always been to run and get him. But he told me some sobering realities on home invasion:

1) Its almost always related to drugs. Drugs, drug money, drug weapons, etc.
2) His first and most important weapon in the house is his cell phone.
3) In the event of a home invasion; he would call 911, gather his family together behind a locked door, and only threaten an intruder if they were trying to get to him through that door.
4) Most people who are shot during a home invasion are the occupants loved ones.

Me - If someone was on my property, inside or out, I'd take a similar approach sans me being behind a locked door. Wife would be locked away with our dogs. I would go out, confront intruder and let them know the cops are coming. If they attack me, I'd try to string it out until the cops arrive to witness it. Simple as that. I'm a big target and can put up a fight. I'd be exceptionally loud too. You see, I could not live with myself if I shot a kid or got locked in a legal battle in which the scum-bag wins. But I'll gladly take a beating in order for them to get locked up. Knife or bullet wound? Not excited about it, but stand by my plan.

Wife might not agree to all of that though...

You have kids not asking to dispute anything just curious? My biggest fear in life is leaving my 2 boys without a father. My wife could manage without me she is a strong women but wouldn't want to put my 2 boys through that. My family comes first if that means being tried for murder so be it my family will know I did the right thing and better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I'd take my chances on a court trial rather than some scum bag taking my life and ruining my family's lives.

1 - NYC is safer than it's ever been.

2 - I use to feel pretty much like you do, so you know what I did? I moved.

Are you saying #1 is true because of #2?

No. NEVER in my life have I ever set foot in NYC.

NYC tells everyone that it's safer than it's ever been. Since I've never set foot there, no clue if it's true or not.

What I'm also saying is NY state sucks moose ***** so bad due to NYC that I moved:D

Won't disagree with you;
I went to NYC once when in High School,
once after I got out of the Marines and the dealershipI was working for sold a snowblower to Aqueduct race track and I had to deliver it,
and twice for the Association of Towns when I was a Town Councilman.

Unfortunately this late fall early winter I will have to spend a week down there with my brother when he gets out of the hospital and to a cancer halfway house,
not looking forward to that, 2 and 1/2 hours on the train to get down there.

Married, no kids. Good point, if I had kids that would drastically change my outlook. And its probably not right for me to gamble my life, for my wife's sake. But I do her no favors by getting locked up either. No good answer here.

Paul - I'm sorry to hear of your family member. But because someone could not pull the trigger, doesn't mean they are pathetic. I'd rather take my chances with my fists than deal with a murder charge.

Please understand I in no way meant you are pathetic! Just talking about that guy in anyway brings out very harsh feelings and the only way I could describe him here without getting myself banned is to call him (and only him) pathetic. The opinion I formed of him wasn’t made on just that incident but the years of knowing him starting with the first time she brought him to a family function.

Very sorry if how I stated that offended anyone!

The question becomes why did the person "push you down" to begin with?

Ultimately, two wrongs do not make a right. One man is dead for his actions and another in jail probably for at least 10 years, so there are no "winners" at all in this case.

35 years ago I was pissed off at the amount of cars that would almost hit me running on rural roads. My mom told me something I'll never forget, that being the cemetary is full of people who were right who didn't need to die.

I made a mistake carrying a gun a long time ago with another idiot car driver. I made a comment that escalated the situation. I walked away thinking I was a stupid idiot for saying my mind because I had a gun. Carry a gun, keep your mouth shut. Rule 1.

That痴 a good rule.
The majority don稚 go looking for trouble and the average person who doesn稚 carry wouldn稚 be able to tell we do unless the - - - - hits the fan for reasons beyond our controll.

Yes. Sigarms was solely responsible for it being such a moose sucking dump!

Actually, if he's a baby-boomer, it was probably his generation that made it a dump; and the crime rate, like the rest of the country's has gotten better because that huge demographic has grown up and got too old for their crime years and youthful indiscretions. There's a less percentage of young (punks) so the rate is lower.

And the guy who cleaned it up was....drumroll...."Friggin' Giuliani". Cab drivers hated him  Who remembers this (circa 1990)?: Watch Saturday Night Live Highlight: Friggin''' Giuliani - NBC.com

The man got 20 years for manslaughter because he had a temper, carried a gun and HE put himself in the position where he felt he needed to use that gun when all he had to do was keep his mouth shut and nothing would of happened. It also didn't help the mans case that he was shown to get into the same type of confrontration at the exact same parking space previously.

That said, all things considered with what he got nailed with, no way he'll serve the full sentence.

All things considered, No ones words ever gives you the right to put your hands on someone.
If someone walked up to me and began to cuss me for parking in a handy capped parking place, It doesn't give me the right to get out and start a physical altercation with that person.

What someone says to you, never gives you the right to punch someone, shove someone down, etc,.
If it does, then police should be able to get by with throwing someone on the ground and beating them for getting in their face and screaming pig, etc,.

No matter what was said. Had the man that was killed stayed in the car, and let the man run his mouth nothing would have happened ,and he would still be alive.
Instead, he chose to push him to the ground. Because of some words, he's dead.

Who got the best of this confrontation ?
Not the dead man
