That’s a great backstop! 👍 But I wouldn’t want to live next to anyone who shoots more than occasionally. I like quiet and undisturbed wildlife.
Yes, me, too, and for the most part it is quiet. We do have one...odd... neighbor nearby that allows other folks to use their back 40 as a target range. Rumor has it at least one of the people is a serving police officer. The unnerving bits are that we occasionally hear full automatic gunfire, and have even seen them taking pot shots at neighbor's bull. Did I mention that the owner is a convicted felon?

All the best,

Peter

It could be a bump stock or just somebody quick on the trigger. In any case, with current ammo prices, they are burning through a lot of cash.

I used to shoot 20 rounds of .22s through either one of my handguns every day except Sunday. That's when I dug out my .357. I was trying to find a way to muffle the sound, but the ammo shortage took care of that for me.
Last year I fired 3 rounds, and they all were kills. For a while I was able to begin stocking up on ammo again but the war overseas seems to have put a stop to that. After getting out of the habit of shooting regularly it's taking time to get back into it; what once was a habit is an afterthought now.

And naively, I thought it would remain rural, during my life time. Of coarse I can see that I'm the first problem, to have built here in the first place, 25 years ago. When it was truly in the woods up an almost impassable road with no utilities. This is what I wanted, and the rules for having a house on F2 land were very stringent. Last year, I guesss the rules were changed, cause every legal plot all around me has a house being built. And it is happening fast, this year. I should not complain. I just didn't know it could happen so fast, and on all the properties around me,... so fast in one year, they are building!
I'm in the exact same situation. It started for me 40 years ago when I bought 6 rural acres to build on. As the inevitable onslaught of development progressed, I was lucky enough to be able to buy the surrounding land as it came up for subdivision. I'm now comfortably in the middle of a 25 acre parcel and relatively insulated from neighbors.

As my wife and I get older, we do see some advantages to this development. We are now much closer to shopping, medical care and police & fire protection. I suppose we are fortunate where we are but I know others who aren't as lucky in their ability to deal with the increased development.

The demand for land has also increased property values in the area. I get several offers each year to buy all or part of my property. I could easily sell for 10 times what I originally paid and start over in another rural setting. At our age however, this probably wouldn't be the smartest plan.

Yeah, there is that "sweet spot" where you're far enough out so as to not have neighbors right on top of you, but close enough to town so you don't have to drive 45 min to get to work, the supermarket, gas station, etc. Nice to be able to get a pizza and not have it be cold by the time you get home.
Of course, lots of others want the same thing.

Even where we are in an area that's been slowly losing population over the last 40-odd years, there's still some building (mainly 2nd/vacation/retirement homes), but fortunately no large scale development.

I've lived on my 10 acres for 22 years now. It's completely wooded and there are two forty acre parcels to the south between me and the nearest road. They would be cost prohibitive to develop and one of them recently sold as deer hunting property. The land was coal mined in the past and there are sink holes all over the place on that 80 acres. It's very hilly with deep ravines and creeks running through it.

A new large medical facility is going up about 5 miles as the crow flies away from me and a casino is being built on the other side of town along with a Fedex facility. My neighbor to the north owns 30 acres and we've joked about selling out to a doctor sometime in the future. Both properties are ideal for a McMansion.

I wonder about the McMansion. How that plays out in the real estate market. Was this the way to go in the '90s? I could have built a McMansion, but I didn't: I built a modest home for my needs: A Smaller house that was quality.
Now, I think I should have built a McMansion. The sales prices for those, now just are indicators that, I made a 1/2 million dollar mistake.

Well, if you were looking at it as an investment, yeah, you could think of it as a mistake.

I prefer to think this way. For example: build a $200,000 home in the early 90s or a $500,000 home in the early 90s?

What were you able to accomplish with that money that you didn't spend on that $500K house over the last 32 years?

So don't wonder about coulda-woulda-shoulda, as you cannot change the past. All you can do is take lessons from it and move forward.
