How about a little tough love as well? That's how kids learn to succeed.
I recall watching a NASCAR show a few years ago and I think it was Richard Petty telling the story of how he was a kid, just got into NASCAR and would actually race against his father. It was one of the kid's first races and he was getting close to the finish with only his father in front of him. It was neck and neck and as they got close to the finish the boy managed to pull even with his father.
The kid figured he was good as gold because dad started to slow down but just as he started to pass his dad rammed him into the wall and dad won the race. The kid was bewildered that his father could do that do him but dad later explained if he let him win he would have done him a great disservice because that's not how the real world functions and he wanted him to be the winner he knew he was. You make your own success.
Anyway, I guess Richard Petty learned the lesson.
