Still have an Ipod?? that's what phones are for now.

Interesting discussion. I know some say the fully configed laptop/pc gives you the control and freedom. But we are all connected to the internet huh. And Google is putting together apps that run off their servers, who needs office, etc. Also who needs computing power...just need a internet connection, keyboard, monitor. Use WiFi when not at home. Laptop gets stolen, no problem, all your files are on their computer in a safe bunker. The circle is almost complete. :D

I think all this is because most home users only use the basics, internet, email. Even today all my laptop users files and such are offline to my servers. When they travel they use Web Outlook because it's easier. Also plenty of other ways to connect to the server without a VPN. Take GoToMyPC...Just Citrix software that we also use in the corporate world.

AS the desktop evolves...I think the laptop will to. All you have to do is carry a laptop 24/7 as a sales guy. You'll be begging for a smaller, lighter unit.

Yes! :) The difference will be IN you a few years. And projected through you.

We even have people that hove opted out of a PC all together and work totally from a Blackberry.

BB is great for email, that's about it. And answering emails, yes, no, maybe, I'll be there soon, etc. What a chore to just open and zoom in on a PDF. Try writing a word doc on one, or an excel spreadsheet.

But you look cool while using one standing in line somewhere. Of at least you use to, everyone has them now. :D

The licenses for VPNs are costly so your going to use the same PC for your employee that works from home that they use when they come into the office.

Some are, some are not. I have a Cisco asa5500, pricey, but it doesn't get used much, a little to much security in some cases, but it also is our front end router. Have a Citrix server, not a big fan but it works, Netscreen 25, all in one router with a built in VPN, it's ok. Couple Checkpoints, I like these a lot. simple interface, etc.

The one we use the most, little $200 Netopia with a built in 16 user VPN. Uses the XP VPN client. Simple, cheap, could be used for home use. Gets me my secure tunnel for whatever I need to do.

As the world evolves, so do your options. :D

Don't get me wrong, we had a company where everyone had a laptop. It did cost more and many people dod not need a laptop. It worked out fine, especaially for the employee. I went over to take an inventory and found about 15 laptops missing. Seems they left when the employees quit. :(

IBM P70 Project

IBM P70
That reminds me of the devices the IBM CEs initially 'carried'.

The desktop will always be cheaper than the equivalent laptop and for large companies, with 1,000s of PCs, buying laptops instead of desktops aint going to happen.

Sorry :D I work at a company known for making microprocessors that are in most PC's. EVERYONE here has laptops. If there is an issue, you turn it in to an IT office, they swap software to the new system, and send you on your way. Of cours, it is a company of 80,000 or so...
