I don't agree with this statement. Those who do not speak English tend to fall onto the bottom rung of society, and as a result, it puts a strain on the social services freely given to them. The cost of providing health care, child care, and public services to illegal aliens and/or non-English speaking Americans is staggering. The trickle down theory in reverse, so to speak. There are also costs to provide ESL teachers...the list goes on and on.

Harv you can travel from where you are just a few miles to the southwest into parts of Garland and Richardson where there are vast numbers of oriental families, businesses, etc. For the most part, they seem to be doing well. Lots of business have no English-speaking employees and do not cater to "Americans". They do not consider themselves American, and they remain immersed in their own culture. Is this good or bad? Lots of these people live happily and have virtually no negative impact on society in general. But as a rule, a larger percentage of this community will tend to rely on public services including welfare, police protection, public health services, etc. It IS a drain on the system, and it DOES make these services more costly to us all.

The problem arises when these people, who do not consider themselves to be American, expect the full benefits of being a citizen (whether they have the legal right or not). This results in isolationism, resentment, and bigotry. Who wins? I am not in favor of denying health care or police protection to anyone. Like I have said before, there are no easy solutions. But having English as the "official language" is a start, along with changes in the school system, and tightening the borders.

Some of you guys just aren’t getting it. We’re not talking about restraining people’s cultures. We’re talking about communication. Gary’s situation with those people using their supposed lack of understanding English as an excuse to get out of a binding contract that they signed is a perfect example of why we need an official language in this country.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Mosey,

Some of us guys are getting it jes' fine, thanks. The English language needs no government defense. It'd be interesting to know what fraction of the population of these United States has spoken another language rather than English, as a function of date. I doubt it is significantly higher now than at various times in the past. I don't think we need to worry about the U.S. becoming Balkanized by the various ethnic groups coming in. BTW, I too would like to limit immigration. Of course, I'd also like to limit reproduction for those folks already here. Too many people is the problem, not too many languages.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

IF it didn't impact me and my tax dollars and the cost of me doing business then you are absolutely right Chuck. The difference is, as has been pointed out, it used to be that you learned English and spoke the language. You didn't expect anyone to cater to you because you didn't speak the language. Now the schools have to teach students in English and in Spanish. Just like in Kalifornia they were actually going to teach students in ebonics!!! In some schools Mexican history is being taught in lieu of US history. This is wrong.

What prompted this in Iowa is that a Mexican family sued the state of Iowa for a ridiculous amount of money because their children had not graduated from school and now had social and learning problems. They settled, actually gave them money, over this. The reasoning was since Iowa did not have a specific language they were responsible to teach in whatever language a student needed to be taught in. To avoid this in the future that is when Iowa passed the English only language law.

With respect to money you can't say it doesn't cost extra money to have instructions in both English and in Spanish. You can't tell me that it doesn't take more tax dollars to support the people that won't learn English. It certainly affected me with the six figure settlement this family got on my taxes as well. Yes it affects us all.

Lastly I have no problem with someone practicing their heritage. You should know where you came from. But also if you want to live in this country this country is no longer looking for an identity. We have a rich history full of customs, holidays, etc.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I don't care what language people speak, but what makes me mad is spending our tax dollars educating immigrants in their own language. And stop making it easy for Spanish only speaking people in this country by putting up signs in Spanish, and having phone menus in Spanish. Learn the language or struggle.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

Actually, if you study both census reports and reproductive rates you will find that the majority of "western" nations and Japan and Russia are steady state or even loosing native population. Germany and Italy, ie Germans and Italians--the native stock--may become extinct as early as 2050. Check out the book "Death of the West". This is not my only source for this info, just go to Europe, no one is having kids, all the people are getting old, when they are dead so will their culture be. Only the United States can prevent the death of western culture due to it's strong but dying religious grounding.
Of course a death of one culture allows another to rise or else we would all be Romans but it was that dang Dark Ages that scares me from which Western Culture sprang. Is a Dark Age around the corner? One could also postulate that a stagnant culture is a dying culture and the reason the USA is bucking the trend--so far---is that while it is firmly grounded in Judeao- Christian -Western Culture it is also a strong believer in tolerence and diversity so that in other words the culture of this country is not stagnant but ever evolving as we intergrate new ideas from all over the world into the American dynamo.
One thing, we need to get rid of is the UN and that koffee, coffe or whoever fellow, I don't like him and could care less what he thinks. The best bet for raisng the living standards and producing a stable world lie on the shoulders of the USA and to accomplish that task we need a strong economy and a free people who determine their own destiny as a nation. Screw the UN.

Starting to seem like a web site for the RNC here. TresCrows, oh how right you are. Check out H.R. 1146, "Help Get the U.S. out of the U.N.! Support The American Sovereignty Restoration Act" at http://www.conservativealerts.com

If Iowa made this really stupid settlement, the officals responsible should be recalled. No new law is needed.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I've attempted to remain out of this one since I am not an American. However, since this has apparently turned global in content, let me add a few $0.02 from my perspective.

The US is not alone or unique in the difficulties it is facing. Canda, England, Holland, Germany, France....the list goes on. Several countries in Europe have experienced a significant uprising in the "extreme" right in response to the dying culture and the importing of immigrants. Recently Le Pen scared a lot of French liberals by gaining a fairly substantial percent of the popular vote in the Presidential election. In Holland the up and coming right wing politicial was assassinated just before the election due to the threat he posed in the election. In Canada the official opposition in the House of Commons is the Alliance party which is considered one of the most right wing parties in the nation.

Thus, lets not suggest that <font color=blue>"Only the United States can prevent the death of western culture due to it's strong but dying religious grounding"</font color=blue> That fight is being undertaken in many Western countries....not just the US. Many of those countries are doing some very strong and creative things to "fight back" against the liberal mentality that is currently accepted.

Re: Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional

Now it gets even more bizarre...
"California court overturns 1954 act of Congress that inserted phrase 'under God' after the phrase 'one nation' ".
