Steve, next time, if you want, you can lengthen the top link so that the front of the box comes up, the scarifiers won't dig in deep or at all if you raise the front enough, and then only the rear blade will cut in, or the scarifiers will only hit the really high spots.

Turning them up out of the way is THE way! You learned quickly.

kioti john, The back blade on a XB84 is hinged, I needed to grade the roads not just smooth them a little. This area of Texas is covered with Kaliche Clay and lime stone rocks from fist size to F350 size you never know what your going to find till you start digging them out, some pop out and others you could bury the tractor in the hole they leave behind. Worst thing is when/if it ever rains again the water runs down many of the roads and washes a good size ditch thru the middle of them kinda reverse of many areas where the water would run thru the ruts and wash them deeper, I guess the reason is the ruts are hard packed by vehicles and the center is softer the problem comes in when my hunters are here on 4 wheelers they don't fit the ruts so end up driving on the sides of the roads and the roads get wider and wider every year. Ive been dreaming of getting a solid 3/4" or 1" metal rod 84" long of some sort and pinning my hinge blade to use when I'm grading the internal roads and then unpinning when I'm just smoothing the main entry road that I have gravel poured on. I probably should just pin it with pins since the rod wouldn't add much beef to the center of the blade anyway if its going to bend the blade an unsupported 3/4" rod at 42" isn't going to protect it, but then I could try your way with just raising the front of the box up and dragging a fixed rear blade, might just work.

I didn't realize the make up of the box, but I thought all the hinged-blade boxes had a provision for locking them in. You have to make a pin for it?

The rocks are going to make it difficult with anything you do that digs in, I'm sure, but using the inside rear of the box doesn't usually dig down as aggressively as the scarifiers which generally pull the box DOWN to China by design. The blades usually aren't so aggressive, and of course, are not as long so the downward travel is limited.

Just try it out and see what you think. It's a tough job unless you have a full road grader! Maybe you should crown the road a little more?
