I'm Looking To Build A Welding Cart

   / I'm Looking To Build A Welding Cart #11
I cheated (cheap) with a 4-Caster 2X2 base-board, and I just set the unit on it! I've got the same 225AC/DC Lincoln Tombstone, and they are a 'Bear' to move around. That's fine for me here at home, with concrete drive and shop. When I take it to the farm, I just set it (Did I say "just set it?", I meant 'wrestle'...) it into in the back of my jeep and leave it there, even during use. I 'fabbed' a 50' cord, back to the power source, that also comes along! Those HF moving dollys are cheap, if that would fit your needs........~Scotty

I have an AC 225, and put it on a Harbor freight rubber tired hand dolly then wound the cords on a hook I put on the dolly, So gloves,, clamps magnets, helmet and cords all on the hand cart, $20. with the rubber tires, I can go over about anything. All that said, I think I am selling it, and keeping the Everlast, 160 amp DC stick Inverter. 20 pounds, and comes with a little shoulder strap. Nicer looking welds anyway.

Thanks crbr!! I never thought we'd get clear to page two before we saw a picture of someone's cart.

I've had my new (to me) Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 stick welder for a few months now. The leads are short, so I have to move the welder close to the work. The beast is HEAVY, and it's hard to move. It comes down to this... I need a cart for this welder.

I'd love to see any design ideas that the collective genius of TBN has come up with. What have you done for a welding cart that you liked? What have you done that you didn't like?

I'm hoping to build some storage into my cart. I actually have a small rolling tool chest that I got at a garage sale. I may try to incorporate it somehow.

Here's what I used for my Hobart LX AC/DC stick welder that's about the size of your Lincoln--a $70 wagon from Tractor Supply.

It's large enough to carry the rods and my welding gear.
In the photo I'm welding the skid steer adapter to a bale squeeze I built last year.

I really like the way to keep your ground cord. I'm going to steal that idea.

Looking around on the internet, I saw this cart. It has independent suspension. I'm not sure it's worth the effort or expense for my use, but it's a cool idea...

If your welder is one that looks like the tombstone welder, on the bottom back corner of the cabinet on both sides there is a 1/2 inch hole, I used those to attach wagon wheels on mine. I don't remember for sure if I used short bolts for the axles or if I got an axle rod to run all the way across. I used flat bar to make the uprights for the handle and where the little shelf is on the back I put a strap of the flat bar one on each side of that shelf and back to the uprights. I welded the straps to the uprights but it wasn't on my machine when I welded it. I also drilled holes on the bottom of the uprights for the axle to go through. For the handle for it I used a piece of 3/4 inch pipe, and I bent 3 sets of els out of rebar and welded that on to have a place to wrap my cables and to put an extra extension cable on if I needed to reach farther from the power plug. I don't do pictures but I hope you can visualize what I am talking about, it has worked out great for me and is real simple to do, and simple matches me real good. I don't remember what I used to level the front up with, but you probably don't have that particular piece of junk laying around anyway.

For my plasma cutter I used some kind of little cart like I believe harbor freight sells, and for my mig I used an old treadmill frame that someone had thrown out along the road and I put wheels on it and plywood for the deck and an old lawn mower handle for it's handle. I took an eye sore off of the highway and gave it a new and useful life, can't beat that for free.

I forgot to mention on my ac/dc lincoln I tilt the machine back just like you would do a dolly when I go to move it that is why I made the uprights to tilt back to make it easier to tilt and it is real easy to move where you want it.
