So if you come home some evening and discover that your house has been "vandalised" with broken windows/doors, defaced siding, busted porch railings, etc., the sheriff's department wouldn't come out to make a report unless the vandals were actually there doing the damage and willing to wait there while the deputies come out?? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You might add to your list of people to contact the mayor/city manager/County Administrator (or whatever your community has) who the Sherriff reports too. He must have someone that he reports to. A little pressure from them should help.

Re: I\'m wore out! - fencing

NY is almost the same as NH. The sled clubs go to painstaking efforts to have owners feel comfortable about what their doing and show the gratitiude to the owners through invites to social functions for free, honorary membership, gift certificates and the like. I've always seen quick response to an owners call to the club president and clean-up days to put signs up and down before and after the season to keep a good thing going.

The state now has more police on sleds, road checks for paperwork including membership to a club. The money we put out to registrations goes to the insurance costs of the state, patrols, and trail funds for grooming, maintenance and the like.

ATV for their part just don't have this network going for them in NY. So to blame them for being out of control is hard because there's no support at levels like sleds have. I had kids going through my yard ripping the corner of the yard up. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I went down and spoke to the kid and asked that he slow down around my place to not rip my yard up and he apologized and never spoke to him again. Vs running the road and getting hit I thought it was better for him to ride through my yard vs the road. With some effort everyone was happy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: I\'m wore out! - fencing

I respect that line of thought. At least in this case you thought about it without closing the door on the idea. A main trail artery in our town goes through 2 yards with houses close to each other. We know if we mess that up were in trouble. So it's marked real well and it's not been a problem for 3 years now

Makes you wonder doesn't it.

Luckily it didn't have to go that far. Tuesday I emailed the communications supervisor ( she is head of the sheriffs dispatch ) I got an email earlier that stated that in reality , that I should have been able to speak to a deputy, and had a report made.. even if it was just for information. She aranged for one to call me.. and I now have a report and case number... with the understanding that it is a closed case.. unless I had more details to provide. That was fine.. I wanted it as a matter of record in case i have future related problems.

Golfgar4,

There might be an exception somewhere but Sheriff's are elected and they don't report to anyone but the voters. That does not mean one can put pressure on them with the press, mayor, county boards, etc. but in NC they report only to the voters. And in NC they can hire and fire pretty much as the please since they are elected officials. Don't understand that part but that is what the courts decided.

Dan,

Yeah, I realize that. But I've seen situations in our county where the Sheriff's performance might be lacking from "operator head space and timing", if you know what I mean. In some of those instances, the County Administrator would step in and right the boat, as it were. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Now I'm sure that technically the County Administrator did not have authority over the Sheriff. But as both positions are elected positions, and the County Administrator is generally acknowledged as the higher of the two positions, it behooves the Sheriff to "work with" the Adminsitrator. At least, if he would like to be elected again! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

But otherwise , I agree with your assessement. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

From what I've seen, the governor still has power over the sheriff. We had a sheriff removed by the gov inlake county for some fraudulent actions he did.. gov appointed a temp one till elections.

I think any 4 wheeler, snowmobilers and gun shooters should pay to play. I lift weights and run a treadmill I pay the health club every month. No difference with Motorized sports.

A couple dollar entrance fee sounds like a fair toll. 2 out 4 in my neighborhood have 4 wheelers But they tresspass on this guys property at the end of the street to ride them. The land sold recnetly to a commerical development so I have afeeling we will be seeing some 4 wheelers for sale.
If i had a few hundred acres I would start a business letting 4 wheelers ride on my proerty.

One thing I despise is people who tresspass to shoot guns. Lead poisining in ground water is very dangerous as well as soil contamination.

Re: I\'m wore out! - fencing

In New York you must have your ATV registered in order to have it on your land unless it is for farm use. However, it is not enforced. If ATV's were registered it would be easy to catch the trouble makers by taking a picture of the license plate number on the back of the atv. Our other problem is our govenor stole the money from ATV registrations that was suppose to set up a ATV trail in NY and used it for other things so some of the people who don't own land ride where ever they want. I tagged along with a friend of mine who was going on a ride with his friend. I am following these guys when all of the sudden I see the NO ATV signs of the NY DEC on the State land. The guy who was leading just laughed and went thru riding all over the state land. I turned around and went back to the truck, loaded up and went home. The guy leading was not a kid and should have known better but he didn't care. Worst part was his kids were riding as well and all he did was show them they didn't have to respect the laws. The police and DEC need to enforce ATV laws more strickly to help get this problem over with. They crack down on the snowmobilers fairly well but not the atv misfits. My neighbors moved out here last year. They bought 1 acre of land and are surrounded by grape vineyards so they now have a bunch of chickens, a small dirt bike a couple ATVs, 3 junk campers and a bunch of other junk all on the 1 acre of land they own. However they ride as fast as they can thru the vineyards which they do not own nor maintain. The owner puts a lot of money into it and try to keep the driveways good but the idiots running the atvs at those speeds are just tearing it up. Laws need to be enforced before we should have to build fences.
