Implement dollies.

I havent really felt a strong need for a series of dollies but this one is pretty cool. Maybe all the matching OEM paint is just too convincing.

Is it top heavy?

Seems to be stable in all directions, pushing or pulling.

bmontini, my compliments for setting the bar high.

Thanks for the compliments guys..... I haven't fabricated too many items, yet, these are like items 10 thru 14 since I got my welder a few years back. One trick? Dri-Cut Carbide tipped low-rpm metal cutting chop saw. Makes them cuts square and smooth! Not OEM match unfortunately, just some Krylon 2-in-1 Gloss Red...

TIP! CASTERS ARE ON SALE RIGHT NOW at NORTHERN TOOL (if you have them in your area) Buy 1, get one 50% off. Just stocked up on more of them....

Have a B2320 so the implements aren't really that heavy. I bought 4 furniture dollies (not doilies) and configure them to use for the implements. I thing they were about $7 a piece. If you need just the casters you may be better off buying these since it's hard to find casters cheaper than $1.75 that will handle any weight.

Did it after the first time when I just dropped my bush hog on the ground.

Now park them either in carriage house or garage with dollies under most. One similar to a furniture dolly is good enough for the Mac chipper/shredder. Just castors underneath the carryall do. Use a 2x6 with 3 METAL castors underneath both ends of it for the front end of the bush hog. The back blade is light enough to manage without anything. Prop it up against the garage wall in front of the Tacoma until bad weather is forecast.

I've built a number of dollies. All have used poly wheels. Every time I buy a set I wonder about the steels wheels. I see most photos are poly. Anyone have both types and do they prefer one over the other?

I don't need to move things often when it's cold, but do enough that the biggest issue I have in Minnesota right now is the grease in them (when purchased) gets very stiff when at below freezing temps, My barn is not heated. Is there a way to condition them in the warmer months to get them to turn a bit easier in the winter months? I was wondering if I could add graphite powder or something to them and try to work that in.

Not square, I would guess 2x3 or 3x4 1/8" wall.

I Have not found the best or most thurough chart on wall thickness yet. Several will flip-flop between fractions & gauges of metal thickness.
Case in point, a local supply hub lists as 16,14, 11 gauge then 1/4 & 3/16" thickness for square, rectangle angle iron etal.

That being said, is there a close ~= of gauge to fractions out there? Like 1/8" ~=?

Yeah that is typical. They convert at 3/16-1/8" between gage and fractions. 1/8" is about 11 ga, but some will say 10, some will say 12.

Deleted by myself, Oldoak.

The thickness also varies by type of metal for the same gauge. Here's a link to a set of charts for some of the most commonly used metals. Note that 1/8" does not match any of the gauges except for stainless steel.

Thanks 3Ts that is a very fascinating read into history.

I did notice a pattern that is a, ummm, (engaging over simplification logic mode) what someone with a small amount of patience for details / or digits to the right of the decimal point (smirks)..... Could start to say..... If you round up to the tenths or "if you have to use the hundredths - it does show that '11 gauge' can generalize (quite sloppily) to a 0.125 inch

/End silliness mode

In all sincerity, I think I finally found a Rosetta Stone for metal thickness "for my brain". Thanks y'all.

Yes, that's true depending on the sloppyness factor. The 11 gauge is commonly used for 1/8" stuff, but a true machinist would not be happy and shims would have to be used - again, depending on the application.

11 ga steel is so close to 1/8" that there is functionally no difference. At least none that matters. Since we are talking about tubing, it is often structural and that means it is just welded to itself and other members of the structure. Nobody cares that the wall section is technically off by 5 thou from some arbitrary number... It does what it is intended to do. Besides with tolerances, it could actually be that thick.

New Tractor & Backhoe means a NEW DOLLY! Based on my original design posed back on page 3, and some mild changes... No bucket pins I could "grab" with some basic angle iron, so a more complex "landing pad" had to be designed. New backhoe is 1100lbs.

Roll it right up to the tractor, not top-heavy at all.. rolls well...

Fun stuff!
