Wow, what a great post. You guys just saved me a bunch of money. I too wanted to buy a PHD for my recent fence/arbor project but opted for a one-man 2 cycle unit instead(about $220.00) I seldom have much help nearby and figured changing out the 3 pt PHD was going to be a b_tch by myself. Most of the time I just have 1 or 2 post to set anyway and didn't want the hassle. Here's a pic of my fence project.

I like your entry way into your yard, it is very nice..

Thank you. My wife does all of the designing. I just do the hard labor. I have a good eye for copying something, but the wife has a great imagination. She is fond of the quotation:

"Logic will take you from point A to point B, but imagination will take you anywhere".

I guess I am with Timber, the back of our tractor alternates between PHD and BB. Pats easy change and a 3 legged stand that holds the PHD in the same position as it sit's on the tractor makes changing it fairly easy... Wrestling with an octupus is about right, but not sure if octupus (S) OR pie,,, whatever, bite as hard :)

Anyway, I did not buy it so it probably does not count, but a boom pole that sits in the yard comes to mind. Course I got it for free from a buddy (actually I think it is still his) that never used it, and tried to lend / give it too Mike and he would not take it :)

Front loader is so much more controllable.

When you need a PHD just rent it. Last one I rented was $150 for the week end. IT was scary though as the PTO shaft didn't have any guard at all.

My boom pole it used to lift the fence drag off the ground for transport, and lifting heavy stuff outa the back of the van. Kinda hard to get a 6ft wide bucket into the 4ft wide doors!

PHD because my Greene auger tip just spins around when it gets to the hardpan. Blower/bagger because the mulcher is easier, cheaper, returns nutrients to the soil. Dirt scoop because FEL with toothbar is far more effective. Middle buster blade: the sub-soiler tip works, but the MB blade is ineffective in heavy clay.

I did the opposite. I bought and used an Earthquake 1-man PHD. After wrenching my shoulder out of socket, I sold it a bought a PHD for the tractor. Fun to install, but hurts less.;)

I have a post hole digger. It is not any harder to hook up than my other implements and I do it by myself all the time. I agree with some people that mine does not get used all that often but when it does get used I would not trade it for anything. Where I live there are lots and lots and lots of rocks. I have went to put in holes and got down 12 inches then could not get any further. With the PHD i just move over and try again in another spot. There have been times when I have had to do that three or four times to get one hole. Doing that with handheld posthole diggers would be unbelievably hard and time consuming. I also might add I can dig a three or four foot deep posthole with the PHD in about a minute or so versus the time it takes to do it with a posthole digger and a rock bar.

A big single bottom plow. Seems the soil is so thin here, the plow just tears slabs off of the mother of all rocks, aka the mountain we live on.

A bush hog.

When I bought my 10 acres, it had brush and briars, and needed bush hogging. So I did the "logical" thing and bought a bush hog. After 2 mowings, it magically needed a finish mower from that time on. In hindsight, I should have hired someone to bush hog it, then bought myself a RFM.

Now I find myself using a bush hog as a finish mower. It works, but not nearly as well as an RFM.
