We have a horse farm, and mucking stalls has become an issue which will only get bigger.

I have a compost pile about 1/2M away from the barn. I have to haul the 'muck' that distance every day. Its not a big deal, but I don't have a good system of getting it there.

We have been simply using the bucket on my tractor, which has worked 'OK' however, the volume of muck is going to get much bigger over the next few months and I need to find a better alternative.

The muck is primarily wheat straw with a little horse crap and urine. It is extremely bulky but is very light. I need a long term fix for hauling it from the barn to the compost pile. It needs to be 'easy' to deal with, so basically something that is easy to or hydraulically dumps is highly prized in this system. Especially since my wife is the primary 'mucker'.

Given the contents are corrosive, I'd prefer to keep this in mind in materials. We don't leave the muck in it for long, but if this is going to be used daily for years to come and I'm NOT washing it out every day, the corrosive nature of horse waste will likely be an issue at some point. Therefore, stainless steel, aluminum, or poly might be best, although not absolute.

I'd like something which can be easily hauled by a side by side. I don't have one yet, but I'll be getting one at some point, and this need would be a primary reason in determining which to get. Therefore, I'd like to keep the trailer as 'light' as possible. BUT, herein lies the rough... I need a large VOLUME but a low WEIGHT trailer. I think a 5x8 dump trailer would be fine for volume, but the lightest one I've found weighs around 1500lbs empty. I need something that will haul about 3-5cu yd which weighs less than 200lbs.

I've thought about some of the UTV trailers, which would work well... but not on volume. They would be great... but I need a bigger one. The POLAR 1500TA would be fantastic, but it doesn't have the volume necessary for fluffy, flighty straw. Even with the optional side rails, I don't think it would work. It is a manual dump, but I think it would still likely work... if it had a bigger capacity. And the fix isn't to just make bigger side racks, because I still have to be able to easily get the muck in the trailer. Dumping a muck bucket isn't difficult, but the trailer still has to hold about 5-10 of these buckets and have access to dumping them into the trailer to begin with. This also means the trailer needs to be relatively low to the ground. There are some farm wagons, which would work great, but besides being 'too big' for the need, the bed is about 3ft off the ground to start with sides going up from there.

My thinking, and I am DEFINITELY open to suggestions, is that I need a low trailer, about 5x8 or something close, made out of poly (preferentially similar to the Polar), aluminum, or stainless steel. In that order of preference. I'd like an electric hydraulic dump. Fold down side racks. Hydraulically controlled lifting tailgate (similar to some manure spreaders), and light enough for a UTV to handle easily.

I've thought about just getting a manure spreader and 'dumping it' via the spreader at the compost pile, but that will spread it all over the place if I don't build some sort of confining structure.

I'm open to suggestions. Lots of counter 'needs vs desires' so I'm hoping one of you has the golden ticket to my conundrum.

my wife just uses our Kawasaki 4010 side by side with hydraulic dump. but it doesnt have the volume your looking for. we only have 3 horses and there always allowed access to run out pens so the stalls where the wood shavings stay pretty clean. she can usually clean all 3 pens with a single load to the manure pile. Except during winter the pens are cleaned every day. Then i move the entire manure pile 2 times a year with a manure spreader out to a 10 acre grass lot and spread the piles. than i harrow that field 2 times a year. so far has worked well for many years even when we had 5 horses and 1 donkey.

I see one guy used a 1000 gallon stock tank for a kiddie pool.
I muck a 12x12 stall with a plastic wheelbarrow, dump it over a bank...it takes about 15 minutes. After a few weeks I'll pitchfork that onto a trailer, haul it to compost.
Maybe you could find a pool (one with bad pump?) cheap on Craigslist, put it on a flat trailer.2020_06_29_21.16.47.jpg

Spellchecker!"I muck a 12x12 stall with a plastic wheelbarrow" should be a plastic snow shovel into wheelbarrow

Northern Tool has 1 ton running gear on sale for $290. Just add floor and sides! Runs on 16" tires. Is 48" wide and can be as short as 49", or 78" long. Item # 125415-2058. Just another option.

I have a two-prong hay spear on my FEL, the spacing of the spears fits a standard pallet. I built/modified a pallet with flooring, back & sides and attached it to the backstop of the attachment with rope.

Primarily I use this to collect chips from my chipper and then transport/dump the chips/mulch where I want it. I don't see why this couldn't fit your needs.

... bugger! I can't upload a picture.

If all you need is a larger bucket for your tractor to haul more at a time, how about getting something like this and strapping it to bucket forks on your fel.

35 Gallon Blue Rectangular Open Top Tank | U.S. Plastic Corp.

I agree. A larger bucket for lightweight material.

Someone on the PowerTrac forum made a large bucket out of an old heating oil tank removed from a basement. Just weld a few gussets here and there for strength, and a QA plate for a skid steer quick attach and off you go. You could leave it in the barn until it's full, then pick it up and go.

Build yourself a manure catapult. Call it Fling-**it-Hi.

Evacuate and spread it all in one motion.

I've thought about running gear and building a dump bed for it. Those Jr. running gear are low enough that it would work well. I like having 4 tires on the ground which makes on/off the UTV easy and quick. It can also easily be dropped at the barn and the UTV used otherwise. This is one of the reasons a bigger bucket really isn't an option, I'd like to find a dedicated 'mover' which doesn't restrict using other equipment. Changing out a bucket and/or dedicating my tractor to this task isn't putting it to its best use for me. I appreciate the thought however, and it would likely address the problem, if not for this issue.

Peter, what/where did you get that trailer? I've looked online, and not had any luck in finding a small dump that size. I'd still rather have an electrohydraulic for a UTV, but that would work for my needs.

I got it a few years ago its made by Cam Superline trailers I don't know if they still make it ,But you could get the battery hydraulic pump for it as a option..Really any small 5x8 dump trailer will work.....
