HA HA HA HA.

When can farmers go BACK to reliable tractors and farming! Dump those computerized gadgets of demon-possession. These new tractors have more electrical wire bundles than my early 2000s truck.

Tractors need to be following the KISS principles. A useful machine, not some broken Cadillac behemoth out in some field stuck in electronic hell of limp mode the dealers tried to fix 8 or 9 times.

Well yeah, they are over complicated, but what isn't today?
Today's generation wants comfort and safety. They want to use their fingers to push buttons.
I have 3 2010-ish farm tractors loaded with complex wiring and electronics.
Breakdowns can be costly, but I will take them over old worn out equipment with little to no parts availability, bone jarring ride on bumpy fields and leaks.

To make a profit at row-crop-farming with the cost of seed, fertilizer and all the other inputs, precision farming is a must. And that requires electronics.
True. I’m sure these are primarily used by large corporate farms. It does optimize fertilizer, seed, and pesticide sprays, which reduces costs.

When you have equipment that is 50 to 100 ft or more in width the GPS guidance is nice since when dusty you frequently can’t see the ends of the implement.

Down side is a $10 sensor shuts down a million dollar machine and planting or harvest stops.

But why does my toaster require computer control.....
They can pry my non-computerized washer, dryer, and toaster from my cold, dead hands or until I cannot get replacement parts for them...

Kinda like the buzz about getting computerized torque wrenches. Nope, I'll stick with my click and dial indicating types, thank you.

Wait, wait, what would be the error displayed if a computerized wrench went on the fritz?

Heh

You can still buy new Speed Queen mechanical dial washers and dryers. Made in your neighboring state of Wisconsin.

Not true. Virtually every row-crop farmer uses it.

Any farm where family members work together is technically a family farm, regardless of size. Over 90% of US farms are "family farms

My old Monkey Wards units from the early 1980s are still going strong!

But thank you, I just looked and bookmarked. Since I'm a real estate broker this comes up from time to time.

Next you will be telling us that you don't need the ability to look in your frig while you're at work!!!
How do you know that your ketchup isn't getting it on with the mustard?

Whether seeding, spraying, or fertilizing eliminating overlap saves money. A GPS controlled machine can cut overlap on the ends down to virtually zero where a manually controlled machine will have to overlap by a foot at the very least to eliminate misses. A foot on 1 hundred passes is 100 feet. That adds up pretty fast and those electronics can pay of in a hurry on a big farm. Also if there are any greenies here think of the environmental benefits of using less fuel and less product. I do agree our reliance on technology is a cause for concern, it makes us vulnerable.

My computer and phone just laughed and my fridge spit out a chuck of ice onto the floor after reading your remark.

Interesting article and might explain why the seed farm down the road, their new large JD tractor with it's huge planter went out of the field and planted the road last spring and I thought it was because the farmer was loaded in the cab.

Good of an explanation as I've heard to date.

Guess that Green Star isn't all that great...

None of that here with me unless you can call my new 100% computerized round baler that. Still somewhat intimidated by it actually.

What scares me more than anything is.. If it fails other than the mechanical aspect, I cannot fix it. All 'greek' to me.

We bought a mechanical control Speed Queen set after a power surge killed our LG digital set. No regrets and we have had many power surges and outages since buying the set.

I own mechanical control Speed Queen too after Maytag went digital. No regrets whatsoever with Speed Queen.
