Intersting Deere Experience

I have two Kubota dealers within 12 mile of my house. The difference in salesman and philosophy were as different as night and day. At one of the local JD dealers one salesman wants to close the deal and one will leave the decision up to you. He is there if you need him. I used to sell oil & gas equipment. My boss believed in using more pressure techniques, but I believed in building relationships with my customers.
Sometimes it is a personality problem, but it's alot in how they were trained and their ablitity to handle the stress of the job.

Egon and TresCrows are right.

I buy farm equipment just like CowBoyDoc. When I buy, I am already well versed on exactly what I need to do the job which I intend the implement or motive power for.

While CowBoyDoc buys green, I buy orange, red and tan.

The dealers I deal with are more attuned to CUT buyers as they are both located in somewhat urban areas, but their mainstay is still ag., equipment.

Farmers have personal preferences as to what brand of implement or motive power they want. It is also governed by implement availability and finance rates.

I myself prefer NH for haymaking equipment but I don't particularily like their tractors. Remember, that's just my preference and is not reflective on the opinions or experiences of others. One thing that is really important, more important that you dealing with the dealer after the sale of your CUT is a farmer dealing with the dealer after his purchase. If you have a breakdown, you need parts NOW. A good ag., dealer will bend over backwards to make sure you have the parts asap. Ag., dealers, the ones who deal in commercial machinery will tend to try to accomodate the farmer in his or her needs while (not intentionally) putting you on the back shelf so-to-speak.

I am not apologizing for the dealers in general, it's just a fact of business. While you may go and spend 15 or 20K for a purchase that isn't going to be made again for a number of years, the farmer is spending 100K, buying parts all the time and this scenario repeats itself over and over. I guess we as farmers are sort of indentured to the dealers.

Skippy -- Deeres (as well as the other colors) are great machines. Though I drive a Kubota, that choice was made on the basis of my local dealers. I actually wanted a JD, but the local dealer is a lot like yours...and the JD dealer I liked was just too far away.

I always tell prospective buyers to consider the tractor/dealer package as a whole. You'll love whatever tractor you decide on...but you're also entering into a long term relationship with a dealer, so pick a good one!

Sometimes it's just the salesman.

I had my CUT choice narrowed down to either Branson, Kioti (both at dealer number 1), Mahindra, or MF (both at dealer number 2 ), and was leaning somewhat towards Mahindra.

The Mahindra/MF salesman told me that a MF couldn't hold a candle to a Mahindra. He also told me Mahindra CUTs where made in India. I knew better, and that was the point I should have questioned everything he said, walked out, and waited for the owner to come back from out-of-town.

Instead, I gave the guy my number and asked him to call me when the model I was interested in was in stock.

He never called me. He also never told me that they were going to open a new location, and for a while would be operating at split locations, with the CUTs being at the new location.

After about a month, I drove over to the dealership at the old location, didn't find any CUTs on the lot, and drove straight to the Branson/Kioti dealer and bought a Branson.

Later, when I visited the MF/Mahindra dealer while looking around for a rotary cutter, the owner told me the salesman was "no longer employed here."

Go with the dealer and not the color..The dealer is what you will need for any future problems and parts..Good dealer, not brand make the machine..IMO......I am so glad I found a GREAT JD dealer...

Good advice - I expect I'll take it. I really like the Deere's but the local dealer has only been in town for a couple years. The two Deere dealers before them closed up. The Kubota dealer has been in the same spot for 60 years and selling/servicing Kubotas' since 1981.

Sounds like two good choices - an established dealership can certainly add piece of mind to the transaction. Either way, best of luck - I, and most here would agree, that most any Bota is going to be a great machine and will serve you well for years.
