The real concern is your average driver who looses control of their vehicle, perhaps when there's snow on the road. If they hit a solid object that you purposefully put next to the road and are injured or killed, then you may be in for a big lawsuit. And you may also feel real bad about it - I would. )</font>

I still think it is stupid. If they run into your tree are you liable then? What about telephone poles? If you run into one can you sue the phone company? Or lets see, is it the highwqay departments fault if I run into an overpass? Give me a break. Everyone wants to blame everyone else for something. I say put a huge mailbox in and if someone hits it tough. They should watch where they are going.

Yep... I'm required to put glow-in-the-dark caution signs on the chain that blocks a driveway because someone might get hurt if they trespass at night when the chain is not visible...although it is much more likely they will drive off a cliff if they make it through the chains.

I had thought about using a really big box with a smaller one inside it, and the void filled with concrete. That way it would look like a normal box, but pack a pretty big wallop when the bat hit it - however I was advised by others here that it might not be a good idea. If someone hit it with their car and the box went thru the windshield and someone got hurt, it would be my butt in the sling. I just put up a regular box on a 4X4 post set in about a foot of concrete - so far I've been lucky, no one's hit it with a ball bat yet..........
