My armchair solution for this is to rig up some kind of a "paint cannon" under the mail box, pointed toward the road, and activated by impact

Hmmm... paintball gun... junk airbag sensors...solenoid... plenty of duct tape...

Get the mailman ? Federal crime.....

do like I did, weld up a mailbox out of 3/16 " plate and bolt securely to a 6X6 post. Found a broken ballbat one morning after putting it up :

At my old work place, I worked to set up a PC based survielance system. We had VCR's, but needed six of them to cover all the cameras. Reviewing tapes was a nightmare.

The PC setup used a software set, and a video capture card. The system recorded when it sensed a change in the pixels on the camera.; ie motion or change in lighting. It recorded until the changes ceased. It was really nice, because it only recorded the event, not 6 hours of nothing. It worked really well. It was nice, because when an issue arose, we simply emailed the the video file to the persons manager /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This type of vandalisim is very hard to stop unless one has very positive evidence of the perpertrators.

Devices that may endanger the public are definetly not to be considered.

Chances are knowledge of the neighbourhood and spending some quality stargazing time with a camera may be advisable. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As halloween is fast aproaching I can remember days of the outhouse when the Owner would move them a few feet and give a pleasant if not ollifactory surprise to the would be tippers! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The camera system only endangered the employee who blatantly broke lab rules, hence which the video file was emailed to the employee's manager.

Worst we did on Halloween is TP jobs. We were good though... We didn't mess around with rolls of TP. We rolled the TP off the rolls in to bags. Then, when we got to the target, we just reached in the bags and tossed TP aloft, to settle on cars, porches, ect. Heck, it almost sounds like fun again... We did, have fun with one of our buddies. We were 17, and bored. So, we bought a bunch of newspapers, rented a couple videos, and spent an evening crumpling sheets of newspaper. Then, about 1am, we snuck to our buddies house. He had not locked the door on his '66 Mustang. We proceeded to fill his car plum full of crumpled newspaper. We were funny back then /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

( My thought was to catch them on video in the act and get the license plate number to give to the police. Does anyone have something like this they can offer advice on? )

I guess we have a better (or worse - depending on how you look at it) type of criminal. About half the time you report a license plate down here, the vehicle comes back as stolen. That being said, law enforcement is of little help. Shoot, I've had one stolen right out of my driveway. Once they have a "party car", they tend to have a spree of mischief like tossing old master cylinders through plate glass windows or parked cars, running over mailboxes (even the bricked and concrete ones), etc. Almost always Friday nights or Saturday nights. They've even gone so far as to swap license plates and act as though the vehicle were theirs. Then, they simply burn the vehicle.
My vehicle that got stolen, was found at 4:00 am on fire at the bottom of a drainage ditch. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Criminals and thieves really stink!

We recognized a friends '68 cougar & shoveled the entire car full of snow about 10 am one day at the hill. He did'nt get back to the car until 4 in the afternoon........plenty long enough for the snow to melt enough thru the car windows to re-freeze into a impermeable block of white ice.......This was long before the days of america's funniest videos but you had to be there !! He was'nt going anywhere !! ( Did I mention it was his parents car ??)

Try placing some of the security signs, 'video surveillence' out by your mailbox. It's more than likely kids that are doing this who are also driving by during the day. If they think they are being watched they may opt for an easier target.

Also, a plain old generic mailbox might be less of a target.

I assume you and your neighbor have also filed formal complaints with the police. If enough people complain they may increase their patrol in your area.
