I'm another newbie in the tractor biz. I want to install a lawn irrigation system on 2+ acres of lawn. I was browsing the northern tool site and saw a middle buster, I was curious if this tool would do the trick digging the 6"-8" trench I want to dig. I'll be pulling it behind 28horse mf. The implement is cheap enough I might just buy it and try it, it will at least work for my dogs underground fence.

My father in law used one to install his sprinkler system. He told me that it worked very good for digging the trenches for the pipe.

See also some threads on these boards concerning using a modified middle-buster to either lay flexible pipe or pull flexible pipe into the ground like a poor-man's vibratory plow without worrying about clearing the trench.

Ditto what Keeney said. There is GREAT post with photos of a modified mid-buster used for your exact application. Basically, the guy attached a smooth bend 90 degree pipe to the back of the mid-buster and fed his irrigation pipe through it. He clamped a guide on his rops and guided the pipe over his tractor into the pipe and therefore the ditch made by the mid-buster....a real slick one man operation. If i find the post i will add it here.

Certainly worth a try, do check into what it takes to do a irrigation system correctly. If you check the Hunter or RainBird catalogs, they give you PSI loss per 100' of pipe based on the pipe (class 200, SCH 40, copper, etc.), based on the gpm flowing through the pipe. Better yet, go to the following link and armed with each heads gpm, pipe length, you can figure out quite a bit of what you need.

Yes.. I trenched a small water line to my chicken pen using only 1 tooth in my box blade...

Unless you live in a very sandy soil area that tends to be dry and hot, why do you need a sprinkler system to water grass?

Kentucky Blue is probably the best grass for there. It just goes dormant if it doesn't get enough water. It doesn't die unless it's abused a lot.

My land was just reclaimed from an old gravel pit, the grael is perfect for highways. It's definitely not good for moisture retention and there are no trees to shade anything. I've basically got 8" of loam on top of super draining gravel, my septic system will never fail, but my lawn has been struggling. To top it all off, the area is treed predominantly with white pine and all the soil is extremely acidic. I've put a ton of lime and fertilizer to it, but the sun dries up whatever starts to grow. My well gets 35+ gallons a minute, I figure I can irrigate a good portion of the 3+ acres of lawn area. Also hoping the few hundred christmas trees planted about will get growing and create some shade.
