My former employment was in concrete pumping dealing with long reach booms, some well over 100' in length. Those pieces of steel lay horizontal over workers where failure could be catastrophic. The manufacturers of those booms treat their welds like lives depend upon them, because they do. Welds are ground, practically polished, to profile them to remove stress risers. Granted, FEL may not have the same consequences upon weld failure, but jeeze, aesthetics ought to count for something!
