It's Cold !

The American ice breaker should be arriving soon but where is the hourly updates.

What I read said it would take a week for the American ice breaker to get to the bay where the other two are stranded. Probably won't be until this weekend that we will hear any updates.

After living in south central KY for six years, I finally decided it was time to set up some of my heated water buckets for our horses on Saturday. With some creative placement, a few heavy short extention cords and just one new circuit for the 100 gallon tub, I was sure glad I took the time to set them up. Nice to not have to break ice and the it is better for the horses to have water at all times.

We have been selling off excess "stuff" at the flea market and some yard sales during 2013. During the fall, I had 15 heated buckets that several people looked at until I finally sold them via Craigslist. (I had around 25 of them leftover from boarding horses.) I sold them for 15 bucks each which is about half from new. I bet those folks are happy!

We should see more normal temps tomorrow which is a good thing for the area I am in because otherwise, underground water lines would probably start getting frozen.

I drive school bus for the county where I live. We were to go back last Thusday but they cancelled that day and Friday. Then, on Sunday they cancelled for Monday and Tuesday. I keep my bus at home and I plug it in. I had it running and checked out last Wednesday already but then as I said, they cancelled. With no school, we were supposed to go in for a meeting today but then they cancelled that as well due to icy roads this am. Then they called me back and asked me to check out the bus which I had planned to do anyway. When I called them back to say I was fine, the supervisor said that they had several in the yard that would not turn over. Not usually seeing these temps, they do not have plugs available.

We went out for to run some errands and I heard on the radio that school was cancelled again for Wednesday the 8th but our meeting is on. I bet I will find out that they figured on having to much engine trouble along with frozen air brakes. We have some snow in the forecast for Thursday morning now so I bet they will call off that day as well. The kids will be gripping come the middle of May and it is hot in that bus while they make some days up, lol!

Sure is different from when I was in grade school and the bus was like a 46' or 48' model year with no heat and chained up! Different time and place though. But then we do have to take these buses on some roads that will make your hair stand up on a good day. That and liability.

Ya know, there's a bright side to all of this cold weather you're experiencing up there in N.A.

In the near future you'll be able to sound like a real old-timer, "This ain't cold. Why, I remember back in the winter of '14... ".

[Mind you, you've got to get through the winter of '14 first!]

I heard it was so cold down in Tampa...that they had to throw buckets of warm water on some "working girls" to loosen them from the light poles...!

After several days of cold below freezing tomorrow will get to 33/34 deg. then rain and return to freezing or black ice.
Chickens now running around with Capons.

They could use some of your Georgia snuggling to warm up faster.

I live in Indiana.. Bust out laughing because there is a small hill on I-70 running through Indianapolis that developed an ice patch on and trucks couldn't get up the hill. "The state later put an abrasive material on the roadway and traffic was able to later get up the hill." The abrasive material was SAND!!!! Anybody know why they stopped using sand? Use to be that they mixed sand with the salt.

In my rural area they still use a sand / salt mix. A sand / salt mix is great for melting ice and having traction but cities don't use sand because it plugs the storm drains.
If your area is rural, doesn't have storm drains, and they don't use a sand mix then I don't have an answer. Guess you'll have to call the highway dept. and ask.

You are correct on the plugged storm drain issue. Also when all costs are considered a load of straight salt will do more for the money then several loads of sand. The sand aids traction but doesn't mix with and melt the snow leaving you with boiler plate ice pack which is a hazard to all but the best prepared driver.

I live in rural southern Indiana and it seems they have stopped using sand altogether in Indiana. That's why I chuckled when the news described it as an abrasive material. I grew up in Michigan and went to school in the U.P. You pretty much drove on a snow/ice/sand slurry all winter long. Yes they had the extra step of cleaning the sewer systems every spring, but you were a lot safer driving on the slurry then solid ice. This has pretty much shut down most of Indiana. Right now it's the cold and ice that are creating the biggest problems.

Since we don't get really cold temps they use liquid de-icer here. Only good down to a certain temperature. When it gets colder they use some sand. Each Spring they send out vacuum trucks to clean up the left over sand. Leaving it on the roads causes dust and therefore pollution (air particulate) problems.

5 whole degrees here. its a dam_ heat wave.

The forecast for us yesterday said it would be nine degrees. Well, it was down to six.

This morning was supposed to be 15. Driving home last night at 1900, the truck said it was 17. This morning the truck said 10-11. So much for the forecast.

We had a bit of ice in the water supply line from the well to the house this morning! The plug of ice melted by 9:20 but we were surprised by the blockage. Monday before the cold hit us, we had the house up to 82. Tuesday morning it was 74 and we might have been up to 76 for a short time. This morning the house was at 68 even though the wood stove burned all night long. I think house being just a bit colder on the second morning cause the ice blockage. The well house was fine at 45 degrees.

Wifey said the water supply was fine after the blockage melted and no signs of leaks.

A coworker had a neighbor whose pipes froze and then flooded. They neighbor will be out of the house for weeks while repairs are made. What a mess.

Lesson learned and in the future I will run a space heater in the bathroom that has the wall closest to where the water supply enters the house.

This weekend will be in the 60s and I can't wait!:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

Around here they treat the roads with a liquid mixture that is basically salt brine. I don't understand it.

It they would just wait a couple of days the stuff melts and is gone. Plus, a snow packed road is much better than one that melts and re-freezes as night...not to mention the vehicle corrosion.

Almost seems like a way for a group of people to keep a job and spend their budget.

Yes this is the biggest waste of money to come down the Federal food chain in quite a while. You are hauling water out to the road where mother nature is about to deliver it for free. Anybody that buys into this boondoggle is an idiot and should be fired.

The roads are cleared because the voting people demand the removal within 2 hours of a snowfall. Just think of the Hala-balu if some house wife could not get to Wal-Mart for he latest sale. Or the elite could not get to Star Bucks for there morning latte.

Plowing the main roads is one thing, anything beyond that is a waste of funds. Maybe a sand application at intersections and hills at best if anything else is need.

Remember this when your car goes into the shop for new muffler and pipes plus brake rotors all around and they raise your taxes to pay for a double fleet of trucks and the drivers to drive them.
