Comparison JD 2305 vs JD 2320

I get that one rarely has too much tractor. Expecting to hear that is a bit like expecting someone with a Porsche to tell you they wish they had that Subaru. Faster is better on sports cars and bigger/heavier/horsepower is better on tractors.

I'll just point out that the base isn't the only place you save money with the 2305. The backhoe is much cheaper, and the rest of the implements too. If you have a full compliment you will have saved far more than the 2k you pointed out above. I don't spend most of my time on the tractor and for my uses (similar to yours but a bit smaller property) the 2305 has been great, and the 2305 sized implements have been great too. I'd guess I save $7k up front, the fuel cost is much smaller, and maintenance will be cheaper too. I can maneuver it in smaller spaces, it is more stable on hills (the reverse ground clearance thing helping out a bit), it requires less space to park, and the implements are smaller to store and easier to man-handle.

In the end you will enjoy whatever you have, and more is... more. I just wanted to point out that less can be less in several ways and sometimes plenty.

Good post, and one that I agree with. I have a great friend who feels that a full sized backhoe is about right........ to each his own. I guess it depends on whether you wish to enhance your environment, or control it/ change it. He needs a road to get his tractor into the woods, but loves making roads so it all works out for him, and his stone walls certainly contain much larger rocks than mine do.

Yes, you get cheaper attachments for the 2305, but they also do alot less work. It depends on your needs.
I'd rather have a tractor a bit too big and not have to abuse it to get the job done, than have one too small and beat the snot out of it everyday to get the job done. Just my opinion.

Lots of good points above. One thing I feel is important to decide right up front is WHAT SIZE IMPLEMENTS DO YOU WANT TO USE.....as well as the work you want to accomplish......now and in the future.

If you can be happy with 4 foot implements fine.....but oftentimes used or bargain 5 footers can be found more easily and cheaper than the 4's. And some of the sub-cut's are fussy about what will fit on their three points. Same is true of six foot stuff.....costs more and not as much selection in used....IMO. The five foot stuff abounds.....and that's the beauty of the 3000 series / 30 hp tractors: common stuff.

I've accumulated lots of typical 5 foot implements for a relatively low cost. Easy to trade or sell again if your needs change. My .02 cents. :thumbsup:

Im new to the forum but what really helped me decide which one to go with was something I read on here...."its better to get one size bigger then you think you need because in the future your needs may change and require a little more tractor for the job.....the dealer said no one trades down they always get a bigger tractor"....

I have to agree with this post too. It seems that many folks here have bought tractors designed for 4' impements, and end up writing to ask if the used 5' implements that they see for sale would work for them.. Choosing the implement size first is important. I knew that my needs were for 4' implements except for finish mowing, and have been happy with that decision especially when I'm trying to get turned around in the woods. I think if I ever moved up just one size, I would keep my current implements though they wouldn't cover my tracks. I just have too many places to work, and trim that are a tight fit with what I have, backing between trees, and rocks that I want to keep with my rotary cutter, etc. I also agree that I feel like I worked my BX22 harder doing similar tasks than I do my B2620, but that might be partly because the BX is designed to do it's work at full pto rpm, and my B does most of my chores at 1500-1800 rpm so it is much quieter, and doesn't feel like it's working as hard. Ideally the best choice is a solid tractor for tractor stuff, and a nice mower for mower stuff........ working on that last one a bit now.

I wanted to touch on something you mentioned in your intended uses, and that is to dig holes. The 3 point on the 2305 likely won't give you enough lift and ground clearance to run a PHD. I have a 2520 and have less land than you, originally intended to get the predeacesor to the 2305 and am very happy with what I have. I know I would have been unhappy with the 2305. At times, I do wish I had a 3320 as I'd like to run a larger auger and sounds like installing and removing a backhoe is much easier. At no other time have I wanted larger, and have never lacked for power. On the flip side, my 2520 is what I cut my lawn with - and am very happy with the results. The larger platform would be tough to manuever around and under all the trees, with the additional weight likely being a problem in the spring. The trail through the woods would have to be wider and the turns not so sharp - which the kids like while riding bike's or atvs enjoy.

Even though they have the same engine, the 2320 is a lot more tractor than the 2305. I really encourage folks looking at both to strongly consider the 2320, as it is stouter without taking up much more space.

If anybody is doing much with a tractor they are better served with a larger tractor and a separate lawn mower.
