JD 5085M PTO disengages

Hi everyone,

I was checking my PTO on my 2009 5085M yesterday and it would disengage after about 10 seconds. Has anyone experienced before? I am thinking it has to be electrical (spool valve or solenoid of some sort), but I have no idea the location of the valve / solenoid.

Can someone point the way please?

I would say you need a new PTO switch. You could also ask your dealer to warranty it since its defective if its still under warranty.

Thanks Ed. I'll give it a shot. Given how repeatable it is with respect to the duration prior to cutoff, it seems more of a thermal type event such as a solenoid overheating or something to that effect.

The switch is the lowest cost solution, and I guess I can climb up the money tree to the next costlier component if this does not fix it.

Are any error codes displayed. I'll guess faulty pto shaft speed sensor or loose wire.

No codes. The amber PTO light goes off on the dash at the same time I hear the click of it disengaging.

So I am kinda with you that something is telling the computer to cut it off.

Do you have a general location I can look for this sensor?

Just read a bit of that forum post, a 6420 and a 5085m are completely different tractors so I doubt your tractor will be having this situation. Plus a 5085M is much newer than a 6420 and these problems wouldn't be showing up this early.

Ed...thanks for the feedback. I guess i was just grasping for straws.

I'll look for damaged cables in the morning and then move to the speed sensor. I have been looking for the location on the diagrams on JDParts for the sensor, but have not been to find it.

And pointers?

I think that's the pto sensor.

Keep in mind that I'm GUESSING that is your tractors pto problem.

Just giving you guys an update. I went to the back of the tractor where the speed sensor is and..... The 2 pin connector had somehow got disconnected.

Plugged it in and pto runs with no issues.

It's always easy to fix something when you have a electrical schematic and or the drawings.

Trust me, I am a mechanical engineer and my brother is an aircraft airframes and power plants mechanic. He always has his manuals when working on helicopters and planes. He goes by the "book" because if he misses a step it's millions of dollars and potentially hundreds of lifes on the line.

My wife saw my frustration in not having the diagnosis and repair manuals for my 5085m. She went online and ordered the 2 shop manual CDs from JD.

She's a keeper!!!! I got lucky and found a WSM for my M9540 electronically here on TBN.

Your lucky. JD seems to have a tight grip on the manuals, trust me I looked everywhere on line for a copy.

$350 for 2 CDs is steep for sure. I have the shop manuals for all 3 of my Toyota's and over the last decade I have for sure saved thousands doing it myself. Most shop rates are 100+ per hour and things can add up quick.

Glad I figured it out before I leave to Asia tomorrow on business, otherwise it would have driven me crazy for 3 weeks

Honest, I'm not lieing here, I got mine from a guy that posted here from Finland. Evidently he can access those manuals over there. I can't. The Wife is fixing him up a big "Missouri" care package to mail over in gratitude.
