Put on a new solenoid last night and at first it turned over but very slowly with a noise that almost sounded like grinding. Then all I got was a click when I turned the key. I am getting plenty of spark at the solenoid now so the other solenoid was bad. When I jump it with a screw driver I also only get a spark. So now is it the starter that's bad or do I need to check elsewhere.

Are you getting 12v to the small terminal of the Solenoid when the key is in the Start position?

Maybe, but first you need to start over with a freshly charged and load-tested batter. And some good battery connections - both cables, both ends. Sometimes the lugs get enough corrosion between the copper strands and the steel lugs - to the point that insufficient current from an otherwise good battery gets to the starter.

Battery checked out OK and all connections were cleaned when I took it apart. If I am using a screwdriver to jump it then don't I have 12 volts which eliminates the switch. This was the voltage when I checked it.

I notice from your profile that this is a 2003 tractor. Is it the original battery?

I'm not sure what your mean 'battery checked out OK'. Merely testing voltage at the terminals doesn't mean anything - a specific gravity test or load testing is what you need. The ability to deliver current under heavy loads (starting a diesel qualifies as a very heavy load) is critical.

Take the battery in to NAPA or some such and have it tested. 5 years is pretty good for one of these batteries.

The battery is less than a year old.

When you say spark what are you meaning? This is confusing to me, maybe its my Indiana public SKOOL'N. Does the tractor start when you use the key? If not does it start when you use the screwdriver?

Try this. Park your truck near the tractors starter side. Hook jumper cables up to the stater, not the battery. Make sure you get a good ground on the stater for the negative side. If it starts no problem it has to be your wiring, battery, or ground. I actually made up a ground cable that goes from the battery to the base of the starter under one of the stater bolts.

I had a lug fall out of one of the wonderful GM crap side lug batteries when it was only 1 year old. Up to that point I had problems starting and could not trace it.

It won't start with the key or the screwdriver. I get a click with the key and a spark with the screwdriver. I will try jumping it that way and see what happens. Is the hookup the same as you mentioned before except with the starter on the tractor? If it doesn't start then what should I check next or does that definitely mean it's the starter. I don't have internet at home because all we can get is dialup unless we go with satellite internet. If I can get more to check if this doesn't work it would be helpful.

Mark... all the trying won't help if the starter is bad..remove it and bring it to a electical motor repair shop and have them test it...or better yet just tell them to overhaul it. If no repair shop in your area..you may need to replace it. You've been messing with this long enough...It's time to address the seven hundred pound gorilla in the room.(the starter)

You've replaced the solenoid...so..You either have poor electrical connections,(you clean and checked them) .. not enough amps (you tried jumping it)...or a bad starter...of course this could be mechanical...but lets hope not (rotating the engine by hand with the glow plugs out could confirm that)

Good luck..
