I tested the starter per DiamondPilot's post. The starter did run spin with that hookup. In a previous post I put a drawing of how I hooked it up. The large post at the bottom of the picture is connected to the copper strap that attaches to the starter. The top is where the positive battery cable is hooked up. This is the opposite post where I put the positive cable on my connection so do I have the solenoid posts hooked up wrong?
Thanks again for all the help.

Mark,
Here is what my wiring looks like at the Starter/Solenoid.

Ok, I went out and looked at my old starter/solenoid sitting on the shelf. The small post for the red wire of the solenoid is farthest away from the starter just like the picture above.

Then there is only one possible way to hook up the copper strap from the starter motor to the solenoid. The remaining big lug gets the small white wire and the large wire coming from the battery.

Its possible you have the solenoid turned 180 deg which may have some affect on how it operates.

If you do change the solenoid 180 deg and still can not get it to work you need to just order a new solenoid since you starter motor seem to be fine after you checked it as I suggested.

If you have any questions and its easier to talk on the phone you can call. I will PM you with my phone number.

Mark,
One other thought occurs to me.
When you had the Starter and Solenoid removed, did you do any disassembly of the Solenoid?

My solenoid is hooked up as shown in the picture. I was confused because for the test the positive hooked up to the post with the copper strap. I did have the solenoid apart and the contacts weren't very clean so I cleaned them. Now that I know the starter is OK I am going to take it apart per Greg G's suggestin and check the wiring in the solenoid.

Mark,
When you disassembled and reassembled the Solenoid, did you put it back together with the single wire and double wires in the correct positions?

erj,
The wires are connected correctly because I made notes of what went where when I took it apart.

Mark,
Thank you for the response. I thought that perhaps this might be the problem that you are having now with trying to 'short' the starter.

The wiring on the starter looked OK. When I put it back on the tractor I had a good spark but didn't try and start it because it was late. The next day with the key it sounded like something grinding but not the starter. Then I had nothing on the solenoid. I am going to order a new solenoid. Will respond when I get it in and installed. Appreciate all the input.
