John Deere 2040
Hello everyone, this is my first post and I'm looking forward to your imput.
I just acquired a late model John Deere 2040 with what I belive is a 145 loader (has been painted). The bucket and boom are slow and week ,steering goes out now and then and the brakes will sink to the bottom. I changed the fluid and filter. It appears there is a two stage clutch and it does move faster in the first stage. But still to slow and week. The lines are tied into the filter and high presure line not in the back ports. Any advice would be appreciated .
Thanks

Did you clean the transmission screen?

Besides checking/cleaning sump screen as Zebrafive suggested I'd recommend checking stand-by pressure. It should be 2250 psi.

Thank you all for your suggestions, been out of town for a while.
After cleaning screens and changing filters a friend tested some pressures and came to the conclusion that the trans pump needs to be rebuilt. He's not for sure and the tractor has to be split to verify. I plan on limping it along through the winter and addressing the issue in the spring.
It appears to have a leak in the hydro pump up front that I will need to take care of soon.
The instament panel has been replaced with the basic volt, temp. and oil pressure,no tach. If anyone knows where to find a used instament panel I'm all ears.
Thanks again for your help.

Are you sure the tractor has to be split? My JD 3010 (1961-1963 era) had a jerky loader (148) operation and after doing almost everything you can imagine to it, including changing the power brake control and having the hydraulic pump (driven off the front of the crank) inspected (it was in great shape) we finally decided to check the charge pump in the differential area. That required removing the seat and lifting the top off the transmission/differential. No splitting of the tractor necessary and in fact splitting it wouldn't have given access to the charge pump anyways. The charge pump was removed, inspected and deemed needing to be replaced. A new unit cured the problem.

You know, that old beast is 50 years old and it is still a great tractor to operate.

Hello again everyone, still working on my late model 2040 1980. I need to
find a gauge cluster and John deere wants over $1200 for it. Was hoping some of you resourceful members might advise me on a more affordable option.

2040 is different. Trans pump sends oil to front pump. It's at the front of the trans, takes a split to access.

Ditto what Zebrafive stated 2040 must be split to R&R trans pump.
