John Deere 4310
I have a John Deere 4310 tractor, it keeps shutting off in the middle of cutting grass. Fuse 5 keeps blowing. Have replaced water pump and thermostat without any changes in the way it runs. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Due to the age it should be a simple tractor with no computer. I don't know what fuse 5 controls - that information would be helpful. I'll surmise when the fuse blows you may lose power to a solenoid controlling fuel. With the newer tractors the fuel flow is stopped by a solenoid when you turn off the key. With older tractors it was done manually with a lever as the key only controlled charging the battery. I'd start there.

F5 might be a buggar to trace. Here is a list of all the connections to it. If it is only blowing when you are mowing my guess would be something the PTO circuit. Do you have a mid mount mower or just using the rear PTO?

Switched Power - Run - SST, ePowrReverser, and
eHydro Main Circuits:
In addition to the voltage present at the locations of the
unswitched power circuits, voltage must be present at the
following components during the following conditions: key
switch in the run position, transmission in neutral, PTO(s) in
off position, park brake locked, MFWD in unlock position,
operator off seat:
• Key Switch terminals 3 and 5
• Alternator terminal IG
• F5 Fuse
• X3 Connector
• Seat Switch
• Park Brake Switch terminals A, B, C and D
• X8 Connector terminals A and K
• Rear PTO Switch terminals A, D, F, G and H
• Mid PTO Switch terminals A, G and H
• MFWD Switch terminals 1 and 2
• V2 Diode Block terminals 1 and 2
• MFWD Solenoid
• K2 Start Relay terminal 86
• K5 Trailer Relay terminal 86 (if equipped)
• K6 Fuel Solenoid Timer Module terminals 30 and 87A
• K11 Rear PTO Interlock Relay terminal 86
• K12 PTO Interlock Relay terminal 30
• K13 Neutral Relay terminal 30
• K14 Mid PTO Interlock Relay terminal 30
• K15 Mid PTO Lockout Relay terminal 30
• K16 Mid PTO Relay terminal 30

Here is the wiring diagram. F5 is in the top left area near the alternator symbol. You can right click and save this to your computer to blow it up and scroll to the different connections.

All of the K7 through K16 relays are the same. Try swapping the turn signal relays with the PTO relays you are using. If you don't have mid PTO you won't have those relays in your panel.

We do not have a mid PTO. Rear only. What would you recommend doing first? I am a novice!

Is the fuse only blowing when you mow?

Try swapping the turn signal relays with the PTO relays.

Thank you. Will the turn signal relays be in the spots you listed even with a rear PTO only?

Yes. The slots for mid PTO relays will just be empty.

WARNING: NEVER PUT A FUSE IN THE #12 SLOT!!!!!!

I had intermittent stopping issues with my 4410. It'll be the same wiring harness if you have ehydro like I do. Eventually I discovered the problem when I needed to repair a broken wire in the seat switch harness.

Thread is here: By pass of seat safety switch - pro's & con's

I don't know if the problem could be a relay issue. I'm thinking it is an easy first step to try.

The description of it running 5 minutes before blowing the fuse sounds like something warming up before it shorts.

I think that it must be in the PTO circuit since it only happens when mowing.

Looking forward to the eventual fix and report.

Thank you so much. I have a lot to try - I may end up taking it into the shop if I can't trace the issue.

Does anyone know which slot the PTO relay is in? I found the starter relay (3rd down on the far left) not sure what any of the other ones are. This will really help if someone has a diagram of the relays.

Yes just when I mow
Do you happen to know what F5 works? I am going to try to trace it back from there if the PTO/Turn signal swap doesn't work. Thanks! You have been a huge help!
