John deere 820 German and two farmall super av
Hello. I'm new to this forum. I just purchased a john deere 820 German for 800 dollars. It was running 2 years ago and they sat it up because the starter went out. I never installed a starter yet to crank it but is there any other problems I should look for on this model??

I would check all fluids and give her a shot.

Welcome to the forum.

There also seems to be a oil leak where the pto lever goes in rearend. Is there a seal there???

Before I spent money on a starter I'd check the fluids to be sure they were at the full mark, change fuel filter and tow start it to check operation of tractor. You will need a good battery as the fuel is controlled by an electric solenoid(pushing key in to activate/pull out to kill engine). Pto lever has an o-ring seal (parts key #3 R28776) but changing it won't be easy.

What is involved with changing the o ring on the pto lever?

Change the antifreeze and use a real HD diesel rated antifreeze along with distilled water. Or you will be replacing the wet sleeves.
Flush the entire transmission/hydraulic system, change filter, clean screen and refill with Hy-Gard. Or be ready to pay for new brakes.

I'm more familiar with old farmalls, so where is the hydraulic filter located??

Best to call 1-800-522-7448 then order the operators and service manuals. A few lines of info from Bubba on the Internet is a pale comparison to a manual written by the folks at JD that know the tractor inside and out.

Hyd filter is on RH side under footrest. Before I spent a lot of $$$$$$$ on the tractor I would find out if it will run & operate correctly.

What is involved with changing the o ring on the pto lever?

Removing 3 pt cover then removing spring pin to get shift lever out of trans case to renew o-ring and reassemble in a very hard to access place. A very difficult task.

Thanks for the help. Will keep y'all posted. Anything else I need to know about these little tractors?? Are they reliable?

Very reliable tractor. Bought one in 1972 and still running good today. Good to use for grading, bush hogging, cutting and raking hay, etc. o ly real problem rear hydraulic leak as mention by others but not a major issue. Agree need two good batteries. What is overall condition of tractor? If you decide you don't want to keep it, let me know for I might be interested.

I remember when I sold those 3 cyl 820's when they were new. First tractors I had sold that were built in Germany and I was very skeptical. They turned out to be very good tractors just deliver them & forget them hardly ever any warranty work was performed on them.

I will let you know. The tractor is in fairly good shape. Sheet metal is decent just missing battery cover and side screens. It has a new clutch that was installed three years ago. It spent most of its life on a ballpark running a finishing mower. Overall it's decent. It does have turf tires on the rear and will be looking to replace them with regular tractor tires. If anyone knows where I can maybe get the sheet metal parts I need let me know thanks.

Every now and again you can find leads on on E-Bay. Ascension Equipment in Gonzales can get new but oh so pricey.
