Murphy reminded me that I didnt update everyone with an outcome.

The supplier was 84 lumber. The manager was not confident he could supply enough boards that I would accept so I got refunded. I sent back the following

76 2x6x12'x
20 2x6x8'x
8 2x6x14'x
4 2x12x12'x
1 sheet OSB.

The 2x6's were the junk boards I pictured earlier. The OSB was a sheet that looks like it was damaged in shipment with the ratchet strap. The 2x12x12's, there was nothing wrong with. But they were #2 grade. They are for a header and 84 didnt carry #1's so I asked him to hand select some good ones. Well, since I was sending lumber back and going to pick up replacements at a place that does carry #1's, I went that route.

Here is what I got. Lots better

How much was the price difference? Those are some straight boards!

Those are from holmes/carter lumber.

Bout 10-20/cents a board more.

When I got my quote from them origionaly, they were about 50-70 cents a board more. Their prices must have come down some.

In years past, I've bought a LOT of lumber from Carter lumber... For me, it's always been a great place to buy things because they have knowledgeable people behind their counters and they let me pick what ever lumber I want!

Prices fluctuate from all of these stores from week to week around here. Carter and 84 would be at the bottom of my list for quality. I have found Menards to be one of the best, but they do have some lousy lumber sometimes (they all do). I have had Menards deliver, and I was nervous about not getting my pick or lumber, but it turned out to be fantastic service. I will use them in the future for delivery of large loads.

The Carter in Ashland county closed a year or so ago I think it had been there for 40~50 years... There long before Super Wallyworld moved in behind them... there is new HD a mile down the road that out priced them I think & a good number of Amish mills locally that I can/do shop at for specific needs...

I been shopping Menards most often anymore with 11% off and or use my Vet Benefit for 10% off at the other two Lowes & HD.

I always hand pick my lumber when i buy from building supply stores. The people there don't like it but i tell them i paid for good quality dimensionally correct lumber and that is what i am leaving with , i don't come here to buy firewood.. i get that from the bush for free.
When i need bigger quantities i order it by a local sawmill and i specify what i want and that does not include junk.
AFAIAC the Customer is still king.
